Regine Velasquez
does a Lois Lane in ‘Captain Barbell’

By Kaye Villagomez

We all know that she kicks butts when she belts out ear-piercing notes. Nobody does it like Regine Velasquez. The way she puts so much emotion in a song plus the fact that she remains loveless despite her undeniable charm give the impression that she’s the yearning type.

But she’s just not.

“I’m the last person who would be the damsel-in-distress type,” she told us at the shooting of “Captain Barbell” in Marikina. In this re-issue of the Mars Ravelo Classic, Regine plays Cielo, an elementary school teacher and the object of Enteng’s (Ogie Alcasid) affection. It could easily be predicted then that Cielo falls for Enteng’s alter ego, the superhero/hunk Captain Barbell played by Bong Revilla. Nonetheless, this box-office-positive — being megged by Mac Alejandre under Premiere Productions to be released through Viva Films — appeals solidly as one of the most anticipated films of this generation. It would be a totally interesting experience to see “Captain Barbell” being interpreted in this special effects-privileged age.

Intended for the December Film Festival, “Captain Barbell” will have Regine flying with Bong in their version of a Superman-Lois Lane flight. “In the movie, although I’m very nice to Enteng because I saw his kindness, I remain unaware of his feelings for me. Lalo na nung nakita ko na si Captain Barbell. I was immediately attracted to Captain Barbell nga to the point that I thought I’m really falling for him. But as Direk Mac (Alejandre) was explaining to me a while ago, ma-re-realize ko na attracted lang talaga ako kay Captain Barbell, as in super fascinated, but it’s not love. Lagi lang talaga niya akong nire-rescue kaya na-sweep ako kay Captain Barbell.”

When asked if she ever felt like she needed a superhero to rescue her, Regine easily dismissed the thought and even said that she’s her own superhero. “I don’t like being rescued. In real life, I would even tell my best friend about my problems but I’d rather that she remains my sounding board because I prefer to be the one solving my problems,” the Songbird explained.

Definitely one of the most bankable stars, both in music and movies, Regine has had an eventful 2003 especially with the recent blow of intrigues linking her to co-star and co-“S.O.P.” mainstay, Ogie Alcasid. Just like the past issues thrown at her, Regine managed to keep her head together not to devote so much time on interviews for vindication. The first and only time she spoke was on “S-Files” a few weeks back.

“I won’t lie and tell you I don’t get affected, I still do. But I don’t find it helpful dwelling on any problem. At the moment I realize something’s wrong, I allow pain, anger in and then I face all the ghosts head-on. I hate being stuck in one place. Walang maybe sa akin. It’s either black or white, no gray area,” Regine said and after everything that’s been said and written, it really is time to put this issue to rest.

The public has always spied on Regine’s lovelife. Hers is one of the most publicized that even potential suitors don’t escape the headlines. The Regine we talked to that afternoon confessed she dreams of settling down because she doesn’t want to work her ass in the business for the rest of her life. “I am the type who would give up everything, all this fame, in a blink, for love,” she said.

She doesn’t also deny that she’s been feeling the chemistry there when she goes out on dates. But her schedule make it a little too impossible to carry on. “I do go out on dates. Dream of the guy and all the stuff that makes you kilig; that makes me say, ‘Hey, we connect!’ But my commitments would get in the way and since I’m not the type who would push things, hindi natutuloy. I just take it as it is. Hindi pa siguro time.”

If and when she finds the evasive Mr. Right, she’ll make sure she’s ready for it. “I would see that right away. I would know it’s him and it’s time when it is.”

Meanwhile, Regine makes sure that her fans will find it cute that “Captain Barbell” is a love story underneath the superhero trappings. “The audience will root for Enteng to win Cielo’s affection here. I guess this is what’s different from past ‘Captain Barbell’ films, defined yung love angle dito. At leading man ang dating ni Ogie!” laughed Regine.

Although she previously said that she will rest on doing movies for a while, “Captain Barbell” is way too tempting an offer to dump. “I’ve always longed for a superhero movie. I would really, really love to do ‘Darna’, o di ba?! Kaya nga one time nag-Wonder Woman na ko sa S.O.P. Another reason why I can’t say no to this is because Ogie asked me to. I’m like that with friends eh. Ok lang ako nang ok. Niloloko ko na lang si Ogie na ibigay sa’kin yung bagong car niya kasi I said yes to this movie kahit na sobrang dami kong commitments. I don’t think that he’d give it though,” joked Regine.

She also admitted that she loved the “Superman” theme “Can You Read My Mind” and is anticipating to shoot the part when Bong Revilla takes her to flight. But that’s as far as the Lois Lane act goes.

We were witness to the many faces of Regine in her movies as much as we heard her emotions in her songs. To know that in real life, she’s her own strong-willed heroine yet would give up the Regine Velasquez-stature for love is a revelation.

(“Captain Barbell also stars Albert Martinez, Jeffrey Quizon and Rufa Mae Quinto as the villains; and Viva’s new contract star and “Star for a Night” champion, Sarah Geronimo as Enteng’s sister and Regine’s student.)
