Subject: SF CONCERT REVIEW
It took us more than an hour to reach the venue from our place & since it
was the first time that we've watched concert at this locus I was shocked
when I saw the coliseum 'coz it was really huge as compared to her June 22nd
concert @ the Civic Auditorium here also @ San Francisco. But knowing the
fact that it was Regine, I had no doubt that Regine & Martin could fill this
cavernous 12,000-seater cow palace. And another good thing on Regine &
Martin's temporary abode was that there was a big screen on the highway
flashing their names as the performers for that night. Hmmm........I'm
proud to be a Pinoy seeing that humongous screen.
The parking is really huge & can accommodate everybody & the gates were
already open when we reached the venue @ 6:15 p.m. ...............yipee.....
..don't have to wait any longer!!! There were lots of Filipino sponsors at
the lobby of the coliseum & tell ya, Filipinos were everywhere. I thought
that I was inside the Araneta Coliseum during her R2K concert. Anyway, I
was extremely happy when I saw our seats, when I was a hand-away when I
watched her last June, this time, I think, it was just a breath away (Go
Figure!!!).
Per original plan. Yes, there was an original plan, that the show would
start @ 7:30 but it all started at 8:05 & lasted until 10:45, I think you
know why???????
Anyway, Martin came out of the blue, singing On the Wings of Love & Regine
finally came out of the stage, wearing a fairy-like pink gown, she was
really hot & she looked like she was only on her early 20's or so. Regine's
part was really great, she was like doing a 2nd voice. Then, it was
followed by a Night to Remember song then 80's mushy medley. After this
medley, Regine left Martin singing John Mayer's medley. From No Such Thing,
Back to You & finally, one of the hits nowadays, Your Body is a Wonderland.
To tell you frankly, I really don't like Martin as a singer 'coz he looks
constipated when he was singing & that we was really not at ease while
singing. But mind you, it all changed 'coz he was really good. Oh.....that
s an understatement. He was fabulous, from one song to another. Superb.
Then, it was Regine's turn, before she sang her movie theme song hits. Her
prior movies were shown on the big screens(4 big screens) telling the
audience that her leading men on her movies were all secondary choices &
that it was really Martin who was the first choice. Martin was in all of
her movies changing the true leading men who appeared on the movie. Well,
to some it was funny but for me, it was the low point of the whole show,
coz it was too corny for me. Anyway, she started her Movie theme songs w/
Narito Ako, yes, Narito Ako wasn't one of her movies but the new arrangement
was really good & very refreshing, then followed by Ikaw, which by the way,
was one of the most astounding performances of Regine on that night. It was
just extreme, extreme on pitch, definitely higher than her recording version
What a voice! What a lung power this girl got! Whew! Then, it was
followed by Pangako Ikaw Lang & finally Kailangan ko'y Ikaw which as always,
was the most applauding portion on this medley segment. I could see that
people preferred Robin as her leading man. 'Coz on her previous concerts,
it was always the most extolling song of all her movie themes.
Martin came back and she asked why Regine can do such thing while she was
sitting on the entire medley of songs. Well, it's Regine Marts! Like what
you've said "she has the most awesome voice you've ever heard on your entire
life", after she sang I don't Wanna Miss a Thing.
Back to the sequence, they both sang Motown medley then followed by 70s
medley, from Umagang kay Ganda, Magkasuyo, I don't Love You Anymore & then
there was a special guest who suddenly appeared on stage and sang with Regz
& Martin. It was an endearing performance. Then, the special guest, sang
Before Your Love from the very first American Idol Kelly Clarkson. He
really has a bright future on singing 'coz he was good but sorry, we were
there to watch Regz & Martin. So, Martin came back & on his spiel, he told
us that he & Louie Ocampo (the musical director), wrote a song that was
submitted to Josh Groban for the latter's future album but it was rejected,
so to make it short, the song was finally handed to Martin & if I'm not
mistaken the song's title is Soldiers & it was really nice. Nice
arrangement, nice melody, very heroic in nature & the lyrics was superb.
And speaking of Josh, it was followed by Josh Groban's medley. This was one
of Martin's highlights, he was really good! Then, I was really surprised
when Martin told us that he was actually from the Bay Area & from Clayton
Concord, the very first place we resided & that he took his first year HS on
this city. So, while telling his early youth story, he inserted the first
song that he wrote for Pops, Ikaw Ang Lahat sa Akin, then after few lines,
he said: This is what it sounds like nowadays. Regine finally came back on
her very revealing/awing pink(again) gown. But the gown was the least of my
interest, I was there because of her voice & I wasn't disappointed on her
rendition of Martin's hit, the arrangement was really great & very
refreshing. It suited well to Regine's vocal prowess & it was my personal
favorite, for me it was the highlight of the entire show. The pitch, ahhhhh
..............unimaginable power of voice!!! Followed by Pangarap ko Ang
Ibigin Ka, the theme song of her new movie w/ C. de Leon.
Then, here came her one and only boboo on that night. It was followed by Sa
Aking Pag-iisa wherein, she made a wrong introduction at the start. Her
version was really superb and then followed by Dadalhin. Regine is
definitely one of the singers who can really sing her recording that well,
not to mention, that she always has the tendency of out-doing her recording
versions. That's why, she's the belter of all belters!!! Her range is just
phenomenal!!!
Since, it's a Martin-Regine's concert, guess what?! Yeah right, it was
Martin's turn again singing his own songs medley from his very first album &
was ended by singing his new song that was composed by Brian McKnight
followed by Barry Manilow's medley where Regine mentioned that perhaps Barry
Manilow himself can't sing like that. In my opinion, Martin really did a
good job. He is now one-of-my-favorites!
Then, Regine sang the song of a true diva, I don't Wanna Miss A Thing. Of
all the concerts that I've seen, both live & on video, this was her greatest
version of this song. I can't think of any adjective that will suit her
performance. This was the 2nd time that she got standing ovation to some of
the audience, of course, including me, the first one was on the Ikaw ang
Lahat sa Akin song.
Then Martin came back w/ a face that one really can't figure out on how
Regine can really sing like that. Then, it was the Brodway's turn. From
Can't you feel the Love Tonight of The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera,
Beauty & the Beast & finally Miss Saigon, showing some clips of Lea Salonga
on the big screens. By the way, the video effects on the big screen were
really great, I'll give it an A rating, all of the clips were eminently
selected from one to another, from the start of the concert up to the end
w/o overshadowing the performers. They blended well. But it's almost time
to say goodbye, but knowing Filipino entertainers. They came back, now with
the audience on their feet, singing w/ Regz & Martin, their own version of
Forever & finally Time of My Life & also time to go. Uhhhhhhhhh........
Two Filipino Performers definitely are at par w/ the world if not better!!!
To Regz - she really has the voice that no one can beat, local or
international!
A week from now, they will end their World Tour @ UCLA Pavilion in LA. But
no worries for Filipino fans in the Phils., the final destination is in
Manila @ the Araneta Coliseum on May 9 & 10. While, the Guam, Hong Kong &
Australia are still under negotiations.
My personal review,
A.M.
