Q: You have collaborated with some of the world's greatest singers and musicians (including Barbra Streisand, Sarah Vaughn, Miles Davis). What makes our Regine Velasquez special?

A: Everybody is special. Everyone has his own character, charm, talent, possibilities, defects. When (I) meet someone who is talented, gifted in anything as an individual- if you play the trumpet, if you sing, if you play anything-then that makes me happy and I start to feel alive. I say to myself, Ah, one of my sisters. Certainly Regine is one of my sisters.

Younger sister, though (laughs).

Q: What were your first impressions when you first heard of Regine Velasquez?

A: At the hotel... Oh, I loved it, I loved it. The first note she sang, I said, "Ah, that's for me! Let's get married. Musically!"

Q: What are your plans/visions for this album?

A: First, pleasure. Second, high quality, musically. We're going to scream, we're going to cry, we're going to walk on the ceiling. Third, it might be very successful, but that's only third for me. Fourth-very important- the possibility for both of us to appear in concerts together, because we will already have a past together. So we will be accepted on stage together. There they are, husband and wife- musically always, of course. You know.

Q: What is your formula for staying on top?

A: I'm starving. I'm starving for life. I'm starving for music, for quality, for emotion. I cannot stop it for one minute, for one second. I have to reach that special quality. That for me is what life is about. Life without art doesn't mean a thing for me.

When I'm not creating, when I'm not working, when I'm not loving, when I'm not doing something which is very high, very important for me, I wonder what I'm doing on this planet. So I have to be on my own planet. I don't like this planet very much. I don't know what the people do to each other, as they've done for centuries and centuries. I disappear and go on my own, with my own family. This is the place where I'm going to bring Regine.
