Just my personal guess. I think Regine has a 4 octave voice range, which is already impressive. Lani has probably 4.5, which is actually a little bit higher than Regine's, but is more effective in classical singing. But where I think Regine will excel, is in her chest voice (belt voice). Among all of them, she probably have the highest in the register, for I have never heard of any other singers reach the high notes using their belt voice (not headtone) like Regine. Most singers with wide voice ranges hit the high notes using their head voice, while Regine can easily hit a high note without shifting from chest to headtone (very challenging & tough to do). So even if Lani may have a wider voice range than our songbird, she cannot belt out a high note as effectively as Regine. It all comes down to the choice of songs that they can sing. Regine cannot sing pieces like "Loving You" or "Nessun Dorma" in it's original key that Lani sings, simply because the high notes in those songs are for headtone singing (Lani) and not for belting (Regine). While Lani on the other hand, cannot sing "On The Wings of Love" or "Dadalhin" using Regine's key and using her chest voice. She'll crack if she dares, or she'll simply cheat by shifting from chest to headtone, which sometimes can be very obvious and may sound ineffectively unimpressive. My point is, having the widest voice range does not necessarily make you the best singer in the world. Guinness pointed out Mariah having a one of a kind, untopped voice range, but not the best singer in the world.

My remark is just a guess and I may be wrong. But I am a singer myself and took formal voice lessons in UCLA, so I pretty know what I am talking about.

VERY GOOD EXPLANATION ALEX. Actually, yan din ang sasabihin ko dapat eh, naunahan mo lang ako.... he he he (lussoooottt).

For me, I'd rather go for a natural chest (belt) voice like of Regine's rather than those headtone voice like of Lani's. Kasi headtones is what you call "TILI" or "IRIT" in tagalog and it's the type na high pitch that sounds so MADAYA. Parang "FAKING" of a natural belt voice ang headtones.

Thanks for the information.

Can one singer be really really good at hitting both chest and head voice? Regine looks struggling--for lack of a better word--when she tries to shift to head voice. But she still pulls it through, not "cleanly" though.

Peace Out > Luis.

I think Regine does a good job in shifting from chest to headtone. She does that in most of her songs actually (for style variation). Sometimes she looks like she's struggling, but it could be just part of her facial expression or mannerism while singing. Regine has been in the business for a while now, and she knows better not to sing a song that is not suited for her, or not to sing a song that she is not comfortable with. That Through the Rain incident in SOP was just a bad day for her.

peace out :-)

i agree. remember the last note of you are my song? she does it even better live. i remember her singing mariah's emotion in one of her concerts. naabot niya yung ginawa ni mariah sa recorded version.

interesting observation. regine tried "semi" classical singing when she did noli me tangere and the results were nothing less than awesome. regine is used to pop singing and its what made her reach out to the masses.

alex, listen to laura fabian. she too has an amazing "chest" voice! tell me what u think of her... thanks :)
