Jerry Falwell is a real piece of work. If you think he's nuts, though, you should check out Hal Lindsey.

I think the reason people like Falwell gain so many followers is that he provides easy, irrefutable answers (regardless of belief, you can't really disprove much of what is in the Bible since it is all to be taken in faith) to very difficult problems. Most people don't like to think--it's much easier to have your conscience handed to you. No matter what he preaches, no one is going to take the time to try to find out otherwise.

In short, most people prefer to be led.
