CANDIDATE NO. 12 - Jean Rodriguez
1) WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?
The fact that I am conscious of my existence is enough to motivate me. Every breath that I take, every beat of my heart, every second of my life... they all inspire me to do something. Life is too short and you can die anytime. When I sense my mortality, it compels me to thrust forward and appreciate everything that life has to offer.
2) WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LEARNING SO FAR THAT HAS HELPED SHAPE YOUR LIFE?
When I was in highschool, a girl stole my lunchbox with my lunch in it. I cried and cried all day long because I thought I would starve. My teacher gave me half of her sandwich and some fruit. Later, my teacher told me that the girl who stole my lunchbox came from a very poor family whose father died from a horrible accident. It didn't occur to me until a few years later to realize that there's always be someone less fortunate than I am and that I should count my blessings every day. I also realized that there will always be good people who will help you in times of need. That experience has affected the way I perceive human nature. I have learned to be more understanding and compassionate towards people who may not be as blessed as I am. At the same time, I have also learned to be hopeful.
3) DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF BEAUTIFUL, WHAT MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so yes, I consider myself beautiful in my own way. I may not always think of myself as externally beautiful, but when I feel good about myself, it reflects on the surface. Obviously, a good make-up will make me look beautiful. But there are things that make me feel beautiful as well such as a cool breeze blowing in my face, scented candles, or the playful and gentle touch of a baby.
4) DO YOU THINK HAVING GOOD LOOKS CAN GET YOU FAR IN LIFE IN GENERAL?
Hmmm... I would say yes. Unfortunately, society still judges a person by the way he or she looks, and we tend to favor those who are physically attractive. But we have to remember that looks eventually will fade away as we get older, so what's left is what you have inside which counts the most and lasts a long time.
5) WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE ADVANTAGE OF BEING A WOMAN?
Women have the advantage of giving birth; therefore, by nature women are more nurturing, more affectionate and more sensitive. They also have better communicative skills and are better negotiators than men. That's why men put us on pedestals! (Giggles)
6) WHAT IMPORTANT ROLES DO WOMEN PLAY IN TODAY’S MODERN SOCIETY?
Women have proven and continually are proving that they can be just as successful and productive, or sometimes even more so than men. Since there are more women than men in the world today, women have the potential to change the way we govern our lives. And since women are naturally more sensitive and caring than men, women are more conscious about what is good for humanity in general. In today's society, women contribute significantly in maintaining peace, order and economic security be it in politics, education, ministry and activism.
7) AMONGST THE DALAGANG FILIPINA TITLES, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU LIKE TO WIN AND WHY?
Each title has its own merit and all titles are equal in importance. They all seek to promote peace, mutual understanding and grassroot activism of some sort. I would be honored to win any one of them! However, it appears that the Miss Universe organization is the most prominent of all in the sense that it attracts more supporters and is more vulnerable to scrutiny by the media. If I won Miss Universe, I would take advantage of the strong support and of the media to further my cause.
