I'm not a member of CORRUPTED. My only connection is that I manage their Website, take photos at some of their gigs, and do an occasional interview for publication here. I'm interested in what people think of the band so that I can tailor the Website to accomodate the largest cross-section of metal fans without getting all "politically correct". I was naive enough to imagine that metal fans would be immune to political correctness, but I've found that a large, vocal grouping among them actually can't live without it. Everything must be word-perfect, note-perfect, sound-perfect, and terminology-perfect. Many of them live in a rigid little community of one. My understanding of the band is that it is a genuinely hard-working group of young men who enjoy what they do, have enjoyed an amount of local success and therefore immediately become targets for being knocked and put down. Most telling of all is the attitude among some visitors here that because they wish to advertise themselves, CORRUPTED must be pompous, big-headed, who "think they're the next big thing." In other words, they should stay in a garage somewhere, as all bands should who come from Ireland. They shouldn't try to do anything that makes them stand out from the flock. They should have come from some place else if they wanted to be successful here. What a heap of crap! CORRUPTED's use of the term "grindcore" to describe themselves has come under criticism here. If you were here when the site first began, you'll recall the band categorised itself as "groove metal". Personally, I think that putting your musical talent into a pigeon-hole is a mistake. Of course, coming as they are from a metal community, maybe CORRUPTED feels that it needs to conform with the received wisdom that one must first fit a category before one can be a metal band. I'm delighted to observe that once the band phoned me and asked me to change the desciption to grindcore, they immediately went off on their own journey of musical discovery and are continuing to do so. Someone forgot to tell them to conform. If the term "grindcore" doesn't confine them to one type of music any more, tough! Understandably, this may cause some confusion to visitors who come here expecting one genre of metal sounds but instead listen to another. I regret that confusion, as I try to keep the Website up-to-date and relevant. That's the reason behind my request for comments on what to drop from the site's title. I'm not qualified to say what type of musical straitjacket CORRUPTED is wrapped in, nor even what the terms "groove metal" or "grindcore" mean. I think the respondent who said "they're all terms made up by journalists anyway" is probably 100% correct. But I will say that the recorded sound on the CD samples on this Website is considerably different to the live sound of the band. I don't know why this is, as I am not a sound engineer. Maybe the person who produced the "Feed on the Weak" CD came at it from a different perspective, as many producers will when in the recording studio. He may have impressed his own vision of CORRUPTED onto the recording. Or, as is more likely, the recording turned out to be a musical snapshot of the type of sound CORRUPTED was making in July. It's my personal experience that the CD, listened to in its entirety, is a good one. But the live experience of hearing the band play is far more satisfying to those of us who prefer a heavier, layered noise. And I don't agree that "melodic" is necessarily a swear word. CORRUPTED knows more than three chords. Quick! Hang them all! Or better still, go and enjoy them. Listen to your own brand of metal. Is the latest album by your favourite group a clone of their debut album? Are they playing songs in the exact same way as they did three years ago? CORRUPTED isn't. If you've not heard them live, you've not heard them. Go to a gig. I recommend a BLAST gig, as the larger venue captures the CORRUPTED sound best. And they *do* have a distinctive "band sound." CORRUPTED should have completed an album by now. They would have done, if circumstances had been different. Maybe you would have followed their evolution better if they'd been in a position to put out more recordings. Obviously, any band in Ireland who does things as professionally as they can within their means and who display a minute amount of ambition to do well don't qualify for the term "credibility". If they make any mistakes along the way, those mistakes are huge in the minds of the nay-sayers. From my experience here and on other forums, it is apparent that certain people experience glee at the power the Internet gives them to insult, denegrate, sneer at and erode the confidence of others. Because it's being done on their home computer, it seems to offer the purveyor an immunity to responsibility for their comments. This whole argument, from the "If u think you play Grindcore u don't know what it is" thread, to this one is just a large illustration that you can't please everyone all of the time. If I drop the "Grind Core" from the page title, someone will pick on the word "original". If I leave "Thrash Metal Music from Ireland" someone will tell me that thrash is bigger than an Irish scene. If I called the site "Music", three-quarters of those people who would visit it would disagree because they don't care for metal. If I leave it simply as "CORRUPTED", someone else will point to the Japanese band. CORRUPTED is more than just five sample songs and a Website. Many people who come here know that already. They're the ones who listen to the hours of music that the band has composed and plays live and who understand that music is about music. And when you play music, you can play anything you like. Whether you have permission to or not. My favourite posts on this forum are from those who are here for the sake of music. CORRUPTED has a certain heavy edge which probably falls into a category someplace. I don't know what it is. They don't care what it is. But am I wasting my time asking people to stop knocking them for making music, whatever it is? Probably. CORRUPTED is on a steep learning curve. As long as they're moving up it, there'll be people delighted to try to drag them down. The important thing is that they keep moving. I hope they do. And fuck the begrudgers!!! [Another rambling spew which probably doesn't get its points across]
