Hi Judy,
Great post and Vicki, great topic. I too was raised Catholic. I remember distinctly, a sermon from our pastor, when I was a teen. The sermon was against reincarnation. Not only was I puzzled about such a sermon and I really hadn't given that particular issue any thought.
The pastor's arguments did not seem to make any sense. The pastor's argument that reincarnation was not possible, was based upon the premise that, all who claim to be reincarnated claimed that they were famous people. Since we can not all claim to be famous people, those claiming such, were delusional (and under the influence of the devil).
Intuitively, I reasoned that it was probable that most past lives were not noted in history and remeberances of famous people were an exception, rather than the rule.
The pastor also failed to note that many people did, in fact, remember past lives which are not noted in the history books.
Reincarnation is the only concept that works for me. I can not imagine an all loving creator giving us only one shot to get it right. It would be some kind of cruel joke if this was true.
In additon, there is ample evidence available today, which strongly suggests that reincarnation was, in fact a teaching in original Christianity. Evidence points to Justin, as the first who taught against it. It took those anti-reincarnation theologists over five hundred years to completely eliminate this teaching from Christianity.
There is also scientific research which builds a strong case in support of reincarnation. If you would like, I can leave a link to a site with information on this scientific research.
For me, the belief in reincarnation opens up an entire new avenue of spirituality. It helps give an explaination as to my personality, my strengths and my short comeings. The belief in reincarnation gives me better tools to become a better human being, a better Christian.
Peace,
Dan
