Fashion Wire Daily LA August 31, 2001 - Not many artists in the music business are worth waiting five hours to see, but singer Alicia Keys must be an exception. Hundreds of people stayed at last night's Charity Jam at Hard Rock Café in Universal City until the wee hours of the morning to hear the golden pipes of the 20-year-old New York native whose debut album has already sold millions.

The Jam benefited Best Buddies, a charity for people with developmental disorders, and featured The Bacon Brothers, Uncle Kracker and The Steven Seagal Band. Yes, that Steven Seagal. The house was packed and emcee Bill Bellamy did his best to entertain the restless crowd as the hours passed and the breaks between acts grew longer, pushing the final performance (Keys) back to 2 a.m. An auction of Hollywood goodies snagged several thousand dollars for Best Buddies, including a trip for two to any *NSYNC concert on their current U.S. tour. A teenage girl probably really loves her parents this morning. The package quickly sold for three grand.

Uncle Kracker's musical friend and mentor, Kid Rock, snuck in with girlfriend Pamela Anderson to catch Kracker's performance. The duo barricaded themselves between the buffet table and the railing of the second-floor VIP area for a prime viewing spot. Hip-hop princess Eve came out to support her pal Keys, but left hours before the one-hour set even began. She said high-profile people have an obligation to get involved in charitable organizations. "It's important to show especially the youth that we do care about things are we're not just here to make your booty shake. We have a voice and they look up to us. When they grow up they can say, 'They were giving back, why don't we?'"

Not all celebs bailed before the finale. "Young and the Restless" star and "Soul Train" host Shemar Moore, who tied Keys for the Arrival Invoking The Most Screaming Girls award, was front row for her performance, while Marlon Wayans sat Indian-style on the edge of the second floor for most of the show.

Although the mood of the night was a festive one, thoughts were with the friends and families of singer/actress Aaliyah and her entourage, who died in a plane crash in the Bahamas last weekend. It is important to enjoy every moment because "you never know where life is going to take you," Keys said, dedicating her final song to Aaliyah's memory
