I'm almost certain that nobody has made phpBB do that. I've looked on their support forums, and it seems like doing that requires some major changes to the database and page structure. Turns out, the flat view was a design decision and preference of the development team.

However, since individual topics are threaded, you could, if you were insane, have your entire forum reside within one thread, but that would be excessive. Looks like ezBoard may be the preferred way to go (but I kinda like the threads now in phpBB, so I'm keeping it in the RT forum, hehe).

(By the way, as far as this board goes, it's very quick and responsive at 1:12 AM.)
