From the late Fred Russell. Take it as you will.

A new manager took over a baseball team and found that his recently fired predecessor had left him two envelopes in the manager's desk drawer. One envelope read "To be opened when your team slumps for the first time." The other envelope read "To be opened when your team slumps for the second time."

Well, the year started off great, and the team was winning. In the middle of the season, they had their first losing streak. The manager went to his desk drawer and opened the first envelope. The message from the ex-skipper informed him not to worry, that every team goes through a slump, and they would come out of it.

Sure enough, the team rebounded and started playing like champions for the next two months. Late in the pennant race, the team slumped once more losing several close games.

The manager went to his desk drawer and proceeded to open the second envelope. It read, "Prepare two envelopes."
