Urban myth sweeps UK as Britons go on terror alert
Millions of Britons have received telephone calls and e-mails in the past 48 hours warning them that their city centre is about to suffer a terror attack as an urban myth sweeps the country.
The myth, usually involving an Arab stranger and a "friend of a friend", has become so prevalent that police in three cities have been forced to issue statements declaring it nonsense, British newspaper The Times reported.
Hundreds of worried citizens have telephoned police in Liverpool, Manchester and Chester demanding officers investigate the Arab man in question, who warned a kindly stranger of an impending attack.
The stories vary, putting the man in bus queues, post offices, the corner shop, Harrods, Harvey Nichols and the local petrol station, from London to Glasgow.
The basic story has a friend of the teller's mother, brother, cousin, flatmate or friend standing in a queue when the man in front, an Arab, either drops his wallet or finds himself STG1 short.
The friend either hands him the wallet or gives him the extra money.
On leaving the shop, the Arab is waiting and tells them: "Because of your kindness, I want to warn you - do not travel on the Underground/travel to central London/visit Wolverhampton/travel by train to Liverpool on Saturday/Tuesday/Wednesday."
The friend then tells the police of the encounter, is shown a book of mug shots of wanted terrorists, and picks out the mystery Arab.

The mystery Arab.
