Hello team,
In case you were wondering if I would ever get a completed run through here is my first result. With the benefit of all the advice from Sharon and Jan I was able to get:
19 estates, 3 sanctuaries, 281187 drachma, 6895 population for a score of 4011.

I will do some optimizing and have another go. There are several areas where I can do better. In particular, the common housing areas on the plateau were not stable (need to get a storage yard and grannary closer to one of the agoras), and I misplaced Hades sanctuary (miners from mints placed on the east side of the sanctuary could not easily get to the ore deposits in the south).

A couple of questions: This time I plundered Sparta before the time it was supposed to become an ally and it didn't (become an ally that is). So I conquered it instead. Anybody know if this is better or worse than not plundering and waiting for it to become an ally? In the last year I plundered all the allies once. They got mad of course but it didn't have any negative effect. Does anyone know if its possible to plunder them twice in the last year?
