While searching for a support group, I cried when I saw the name of this one. My granddaughter's name is Angela, we're always called her our "little angel"
February 11, 2001, Angela was severly burned in a house fire. She had 3rd dregee burns to 40 per cent of her small body, face, chest, hands, arms and back. She's now 6 years old and in kindergarden. We had all thought she was doing so well. The surgeries have all been successful, she has almost full use of her hands, she's smart, beautiful blond hair, blue eyes, and even with the scarring on her face you can see beauty growing.
I know that there are children worse off than my Angela. I've seen them and talked to their parents. But how do you tell a child who has been through so much, that the scars don't matter when they do. I don't blame her for being rude to people, adults more than children, who stare, then pretend that she's not there. I want to be rude to them myself.
She stayed the weekend with me and we were talking....she said she hated being burned. Of course, she just wants to be like everyone else. Boy do I remember feeling like that. But I was a teenager. What do you tell a child. Should I not have told her she was beautiful? I did. She ripped her clothes off and yelled, "Mamaw...HAVE YOU LOOKED AT ME?" What do I do? What do I say? She IS special. I want her to know that.
I raised five childen, and helped with 6 step children, but I can't help Angela.
Jan
