Dear Delores,
Thank you for the time you spent to talk to me out in the smoking area at The Shriner's Burn Hospital in Cinn., Ohio. I needed to hear your speech. I needed to hear and know that there will be "life" after burn. You are a very special person.
My 15 yr old was burned 67%, all waist up, on Mar. 18, 06. He is doing amazingly well. Much better than anyone could have guessed he would do, even the doctors. We were at Cinn. Monday the 6th of Nov., and his garmets were removed. He only spent approx. 7 months in them, and he is done. He still needs his mask for maybe another month or two.
He started school right from the start, and is getting A's and B's. He is active in JROTC and is on the rifle squad. He is in several clubs as well.Right from the very beginning, when we came back to Virginia, he was in the public. He refused to "hide" in the house. So far, we haven't had anyone say anything rude. He has given several interviews to try to promote fire safety and let everyone know that he is as "normal" as any other teenager. Believe me, his mouth and attitudes are typical teen, he is grounded as we speak, ha ha!
Listening to you speak gave me alot of strength and determination. I felt like if I gave my son a positive role model, and emphasized his strengths while he was recovering, then maybe he would have a better recovery. I knew that I still had the responsibility to correct him if he does something wrong, but I had to be loving at the same time. Thank you for helping me and all of the other people you selflessly give your time to.
