　　本片是好萊塢最正視青少年犯罪問題的電影名作，詹姆斯狄恩的演出尤具爆炸性，是五十年代反叛青年的一個典型偶像。
　　放蕩不羈的十七歲富家子吉姆因為得不到家庭溫暖而變成太保,似乎和一切事物都過意不去。他渴望自尊，盼望能和父親做溝通，被朋友們所瞭解。他常與不良少年巴茲互相挑戰，聚眾鬧事尋求刺激，後來並相約駕車駛向斷崖，最後跳車者勝利，荒誕的虛榮心造成巴茲的慘死，吉姆到警局自首，並悔悟前非，卻被其他不良少年誤以為前去告密，而前來挑釁。大批幹員包圍他躲藏的星儀館，結果前來助陣的好友柏拉圖卻被亂槍射殺。父親終於伸出慈祥的雙手，而吉姆也因而痛改前非。
一九五零年代中期，在拜物主義與憂慮的氣候裡，年輕人變得疏離、冷漠，詹姆斯．狄恩（James Dean）在電影中表達：敏感的青少年反抗了規格化的世界。美國年輕人自稱自己是「打垮的一代」，意思就是「被打垮的一代」─ beaten down。他們對無法觸及的富裕、正統的美國之夢毀滅幻想。
