Subject: McCann improvements?

From Pres. Murray's Spring update '09 letter:
Last fall, we asked Robert A.M. Stern Architects to continue the development of Phase I of Marist’s Athletic Master Plan. Stern’s Phase I plan calls for an addition of
26,000 square feet to the McCann Center plus the renovation of 8,000 square feet at a cost of approximately $14 million. Stern’s plan meets all of our requirements in terms of expanded public restrooms, space for athletic training, team locker rooms, student recreation areas, and coaches’ offices. It also provides beautiful locker rooms and meeting space for our men’s and women’s basketball programs. In addition, the plan offers a much more attractive entrance and lobby area, more multi-purpose space, and the capacity to move the food concession operations out of the current basketball arena. The
Stern team met with our Athletic Department several times during the fall, and the Phase I plan is currently being fine tuned to accommodate their specific programmatic needs. The Stern team will now move their focus to the exterior of the proposed addition. Once the schematic design is complete, a detailed budget will be developed to ensure that the proposed project remains within the $14 million estimate.

No mention of a plan to make the place look a little less "high school". Maybe that will come with Phase II. The roll-out bleachers need to go. Any improvements will undoubtedly help with recruiting.

The dream sequence is walking into a newly upgraded McCann Center for a BB game and finding a 3750 seat mini-arena with a ton of chair back seating and a raised roof with an electronic scoreboard slowly lowering over half court. Oh..and Marist wins the game.

Been through a couple of campus renovation and building projects where I work. Hope I'm wrong, but I agree, no new basketball arena being considered here. It makes more sense to just build a new one if you want to go that route. So Marist fans should hope that someone with big bucks thinks so too.

Improvements to the existing McCann Center will be much easier for the Marist hierarchy to support. First issue with a new facility is where. There is very little available land in the vicinity of the Marist campus; with one possible exception. I happen to know one of the primary owners of the former Hudson Valley Psyc center. They would like to sit down and talk to Marist but Marist has yet to initiate any conversation.
So we are likely stuck with an upgraded McCann.
They can and should blow out the walls behind the team benches and the student section and raise the roof and turn the BB court 90 degrees. The expanded foot print and raised roof would allow for expanded seating in the BB arena. We can only hope that's part of Phase II

Dont get hopes up - a new arena is part of a Phase III plan and will go where baseball stadium is now - so need to find place for new baseball field (and probably will not have for a few years), part of the plan is a parking deck with a field on top of it. My hope is that they can raise the roof and add more stands - to me it is the small roof that gives it the feel of a high school gym. Yes there are other things as well but to me that is the main thing.

Andy, Is there an actual Phase III on paper? Where are getting your info? Or is this Fox Club conjecture? I love hearing about this stuff. I dont feel the McCann Center holds the program back but I doubt Coach Martin uses the facilities as a recruiting tool. Then again, maybe McCann does hold us back.

The only good information is inside information.

I hope they get the improvements done. It's the only thing that could possibly be holding them back from being the top dog on a regular basis. They should have raised the roof and got regular seating years ago. There aren't many D-1 teams that have bleacher seating all the way around. Marist's academics and campus are top notch. The McCann Center shouldn't be anything less than a top notch facility. I still love watching games there but the school deserves better.

Yeah, it must be tough selling athletic facility improvements in a recession. However, the Murray's have proven very resourceful. The Leonidoff improvements were way overdue but they did a great job. I hope they can pull it off. If Chuck gets things going there will be more talk of this sooner rather than later.
