Subject: New rules needed

I think what Siena did on Thursday was terrible. Only down by 12 with 2:30 left and they resort to fouling on every possesion. Can't the NCAA come up with some kind of rule to prevent this, because this isn't the way bb was supposed to be played.

It did make for a long finish. However, if Marist just hit their first five or six free throws after they resorted to it, Siena would have packed it in. They wasted no time with quick passes either. They waited to get fouled. One break out layup would have ended the game with a minute to go. The other thing. They didn't force Siena to use clock. They scored way too quickly 5 or six times. If I see another guy sag on a penetrator to leave an uncontested three I'm gonna puke. If it was that easy to score on a contested drive, why doesn't Devezin average 30 a game?? All teams do it. If they make a contested layup, it's only worth two. An uncontested three is easier than a contested drive. I could average 15 a game if I'm given the looks Downey had.

Siena earned the win. Marist will use the bad free throw misses as a learning experience.

They had held Siena to 53 points to that point. Siena ends up with 76 points at the end of regulation and Marist misses 9 freebies during the same stretch. Make 4 of those and Marist wins by 10 because Siena isn't streaking down the court with the defensive rebound in a helter-skelter situation. It all played into Siena's strength on offense, which Marist had effectively negated up to that point.

Regarding the need for a rule change. As the Marist meltdown was becoming evident, Dean Darling and Steve Eggink mentioned that a rule change had been discussed in NCAA circles that would award the ball to the fouled team ofter the shots. However it wouldn't have helped Marist because the shooter would have to make both for their team to retain posession.

Frankly, I like it the way it is because it keeps the full 40 minutes of the game in play.

Looking for a rule change after that game seems a little sour grape ish. We shit the bed, they played their hand perfectly. Thats the only way to call it.

It's Goodwin I'm concerned about. His awful play carried over to today. Marist has nowhere else to go to if he can't get his game/head straightened out. His performance needs to be serviceable at the least.

I'm concerned about Goodwin as well. His poor play began before the Siena debacle. His last SIX games...6.5 ppg, 14-50 FG (28%), 6-14 FT (43%), 5-23 3PTFG (22%). That's not gonna get it done. He was leading the MAAC in 3PT shooting for most of the first half of the season. I guess he's just gassed?

I made me think that sometimes in the heat of rooting hard its easy to forget DG always draws the tough defensive assignment (Niagara, Siena and Loyola, away, is a heck of a stretch) plus 3 knee surgeries. The last one not that long ago either. Losing Carter really hurt too. If not for the surprising Taylor, the guards would truly be dragging themselves around by now. Unfortunately, its all seemed to fall on Goodwin. As you noted when he is rested he is a different player. The few days off are going to help. A sweep next weekend would get them right back into the mid-pack mix.

Have to agree - learn to hit FT not change rule - unless insted of FTs if fouled in last 2 min you get to shoot a uncontested layup or dunk
