Subject: Fernando???

Their new hit musical "Mamma Mia" (and it's lack of inclusion of Fernando, which would have been a perfect fit!) has resparked my interest in this song.

From what I've been able to find, it was originally written by Frida and released in Sweden in Swedish and was primarily a love song. When Benny rewrote it in English, it is said that he turned it into a remiscence of two old weary warriors around a campfire.

I haven't been able to find if he was invoking any specific conflict. But it seems obvious that he must be referring to MEXICO or Texas, since a portion of the lyrics state: "I still remember that fateful night we crossed the Rio Grande, I could see it in your eyes how proud you were to fight for freedom in this land." The Rio Grande river forms the border between the USA & Mexico.

I'm dubious that it was a metaphor for the Andes plane crash survivors since it specifically mentions rifles, cannons, bugles, etc... Also, the Rio Grande is not in South America.

That's my take on it. I'll post more if I find anything further.
