Subject: TIFF L*a*b and color images

I have to modify existing tiff images by batch. Some of them use L*a*b or CMYK. If I do do the small modification and store the modified image I have not found a way store the image in the original format. Also I have made actually a copy where some strage tiff-tags or even image masks got lost.

How could I avoid the lost of tags and image masks?
How could I avoid any color model modification during my image manipulation?
