Subject: regarding compression

hello i have a doubt regarding compression of image files as iam doing a project in image compression .

when jpeg files are saved i know they follow wavelet compression .

the question is "i started with a jpeg file of size 680 kb and saved the jpeg files as bmp, again the same bmp file i saved as jpeg the size of the new jpeg file was 68 kb " this process itself achieves some amount of compression .can you tell me what is the internal storage techniques of jpeg and other formats in detail
