Woke is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English originally meaning alertness to racial prejudice and discrimination.

It urged African-American's to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings and was connected to the Black Lives Matter movement.

The first time I heard it referenced was in the Childish Gambino song Redbone.

It's now been appropriated by conservatives and those who have no understanding of its original meaning or significance (I have heard Dermie use it) as a way of deriding progressive policies and attitudes. Its misuse is a sad indictment on those who use it this way and society in general.
