... especially given he was in sub-standard nick even back then (and had glandular fever earlier that year which didn't help).

He probably looked the pick of the (not attractive bunch of) ruck options in that draft, and not just as somewhat "a man among boys".

("If he's this good now, imagine his scope for improvement with proper conditioning" vs "This is his big chance to impress so how committed does his physical condition suggest he really is, albeit he's already a GC academy kid?")
