You're better off without Sylvia. The bloke I believe is seriously handicapped in regards to his intelligence. By that I mean his I.Q while not of a chronic low level is still low enough to be no more than an average 15y/o if that.

Re the players learning position. I probably didn't fully explain what I meant. It's great to expose them to one spot and to let them claim it as their own. What is lacking from my (limited) watching of Melb games, was a game plan.

It's still so haphazard in how the players seemed to go about winning and moving the ball forward. The games I watched, when they were doing well it looked more or less like the ball was being won by the innate talent that the individuals had that led them to be considered good enough to be drafted to an AFL side. What they then did subsequent to winning the footy though, was just seem to look for the furthest available forward option and try to kick/run/handball the ball as far forward as they could in the hope that the next contest upfield would again be won more by talent one on one play. Rather than precise delivery or game discipline approach to going forward to score.

Maybe it sounds like a Hawk supporter gloating as our game plan plus talent to execute it is near the best I've seen, discipline wise in years. It's not meant to read that way. More say, look at Port. Bringing in Hinkley has also brought into a side that had talent but no structure at all, a change so swift that they're now a serious threat to the Flag for 2015 and looking a good few seasons beyond that.

Malthouse in 2010 finally got discipline along with a game plan to a solid in not over talented side and led them to a Premiership by doing so. Eddie completely missed this fact when he threw Malty out to give his man-love idol Bucks the job and they've been going backwards since.

That's why when I read about Roos taking the third year option up, I was kind of dubious about why he did so. He's a full on shut-down minded coach when that approach, that worked in the mid noughties for him, West Coast got blown apart when Geelong emerged and us early in 2008, was being slowly replaced.

Football for now, is about scoring. Lots of scoring. Even Sydney, who still have a high defensive discipline. Have changed by bringing in (to their detriment they way they did it) Franklin and Tippet. Plus thinking the spud Reid is going to suddenly bloom as another class forward.

Melbourne, needs to get a game plan in place along with teaching the young early picks not only how to play in positions best suited. But where, what and who to go to when they have the footy in their control.

For mine, that's why St.Kilda never quite climbed to to the top of the mountain even though they had the talent to do so. They played to defensive when in Nick R, Milne, Kosi (when fit) and a gifted midfield. They still played a defensive style. Especially under Lyon who's doing the same with a similar side in Fremantle.

Maybe a few years of Roos and his rep can bring in some borderline players of talent in F.A that might choose Melbourne as a good side to go to as there's an upside that they can see happening that will bring Finals along in the near future. But to me, the bloke that I'd be hoping nad pinning faith in to really take a step back up to being a competitive side again is Goodwin.

If he comes in, brings a strategy he believes will work and then goes hard at implementing it. Discarding players he thinks aren't needed. Targets players he thinks are needed. That's when Melbourne should begin to see real improvement.

There's talent there to work with. But it's only so long blokes will hang around a side that's being beat more often than not before seeking greener pastures. Not just for Finals success but also as most of us do in life, to be getting paid better $$$ for what is really, a fairly short period these blokes have to make a big income in the professional sport that is the AFL.
