I quote from the AFL's press release.

"... the Essendon Football Club today acknowledged it had established a supplements program that was experimental, inappropriate and inadequately vetted and controlled, and that in relation to the program:
the Club failed to ensure it adequately protected the health, welfare and safety of the players;
there was a risk that Essendon players could have been administered substances prohibited by the AFL Anti-Doping Code and the World Anti-Doping Code and any such risk is an unacceptable risk;
the Essendon FC is unable now to determine whether players were administered some substances prohibited by the AFL Anti-Doping Code and the World Anti-Doping Code."

In short you loaded them up with whatever was in the medicine cabinet without due regard to the players health or welfare.

You can point the finger at all the people in the world and blame the AFL for anything and everything, but have a fucking inward look at your club and the one person who is totally responsible for the position your club is in today.
The person you should be directing your anger toward is James Hird. He was the one who introduced and oversaw the whole program, and he was the one who should have ensured that what was being given to the players everyone knew exactly what it was.

I find all this stand by Hird stuff just false, misguided bravado. Hird has screwed the Essendon Football Club, yet the supporters seem to think he is a hero. Really, a hero? A person who oversaw a supplements program that was administered to a group of players without their informed consent and without sufficient analysis of the risks associated with the program. That is not the behavior of a hero. That is just a disgrace no matter how you view it.
