yeah, i would definitely not call the pumpkins a one hit wonder by far. more like the last 90's mainstay. Gish was definitely hindered in sales by the release of a little album called Nevermind but still sold well and the accompanying tour won them alot of attention. Siamese Dream sold phenominally well and earned them many Artist and album of the years awards. Mellon Collie (yes, with its 'rat in a cage' song) is the best selling double cd set ever but even then, 1979 gave them much more top 40 airplay and is thus one of my least favorite songs - because non-fans base their opinions of the band on that one song often. it's sad because it really is a GOOD song. i just can't get into it anymore. Adore went double platinum which is much smaller than expected but taken out of that context, did any artist ever complain about a double platinum record? Machina only made it to 1X platinum and as much as a love it, i can see how the musical landscape around us has changed so that it can't be popular in the present. my true hope for SP music is that it will be like pink floyd's and continue to sell steadily and maybe in about 20-30 years, really make a sales comeback.
