Wow, great points Geminus. SP did what they wanted to do. Releasing Adore, a semi-pop, semi-electronic and semi-acoustic album, after Mellon Collie, perhaps wasn't the most brilliant idea COMMERICALLY (yet everyone says Billy is a corporate whore because he's mainstream), but in terms of artistic integrity and a show of overall talent, it was genius. And as a result, Adore is one of the better records of last decade. And even though many people were let down, I personally loved Machina -- especially the b-sides.

Just because Billy isn't underground doesn't mean he sucks, and I agree, if Stephen Malkmus never hated Billy Corgan (and vice-versa), and if SP were on an indie label or something, indie fans would shit their pants every time they heard SP. And so what if he was on Virgin Records, anyone who knows Billy's history with the label would know that he hates them with a passion, anyway. Basically, he used Virgin for his own needs prior to breaking up with the band; he ignored the 7 albums in five years selling out deal (even if it meant getting sued, and SP did end up having that happen to them), still made great music, ignored corporate suggestions to stick with a Mellon Collie style for every album, put out a greatest hits, DVD, and an upcoming final show DVD (which is really only in existance because the fans are kicking and screaming for it)... how many other Virgin Records artists from the 90s do that? Janet Jackson? No. Billy abused the mainstream. Most indie kids would call that genius, but they're too biased to come to that conclusion.

I'm talking too much. And as already stated, this IS a Papa M board, not a Zwan one... try going to http://www.smashingpumpkins.com/SPmb.html and then go to the Zwan forum if you want to talk about the band and all the other related stuff.
