Subject: June '02 DC/Balto Dog Events

Here are the Balto/DC area Dog Events for June '02. If there's anything I missed, please let me know at gomezthenewf@yahoo.com and I'll pass it on. -Xavier

Sat. 6/1 830-1030 am, HERNDON, VA: Dog Expo and 2K walk in conjunction with the Herndon Festival http://www.town.herndon.va.us/festival/index.htm

Sat 6/1 9am-1pm, ELLICOTT CITY, MD: Parade of Paws-held at Centennial Park and hosted by Mid Atlantic Great Dane Rescue. Looks like they're having some kind of Walk plus fun contests, pet tricks, an assortment of other rescue groups http://www.mid-atlanticdanerescue.com/2002MDWalkathonpage.html. Although this is a leashed event, you can sneak off the beaten path and let your dog swim in the lake and stir up the primeval ooze at the bottom. Centennial Park map http://www.digitalcity.com/baltimore/entertainment/venuemap.adp?vid=40627 .

Sat 6/1 10 am-12noon, ELLICOTT CITY, MD: Woof in the Woods-sponsored by the Howard Co. folks who want a dog park, this is a 2.5 mi walk around a nice park with a lake. Is this going to be superceded by the Parade of Paws (above)? I suspect so, especially since the HoCo group are getting their dog park in July.

Sat 6/1 930 am -?, SPRINGFIELD, VA: Springfield Days Parade, dog brigade. Cart-pulling pooches especially welcome. Meet at 930 am at Hanover and Monticello for a mile long, flat parade route that ends at Crestwood Elementary School, 6010 Hanover Ave. Contact Rose at RSMILLER@opm.gov for more real info or be underwhelmed by the scanty offering at http://www.springfieldchamber.org/, then "events" "annual events" "springfield days". After this is over, make a day of it by going to the nearby...(see entry below at Lake Accotink)

Sat 6/1 12 noon-?, LAKE ACCOTINK, VA : Rally Obedience, pet rescue/adoption fair, doggie bake sale sponsored by the Fairfax Co. Dog 4H club, plus various Springfield Days festivities and a promised (but not confirmed) Newfoundland water rescue demo. Rally Obedience is sort of like a combo of regular obedience and canine musical chairs, far more interesting and fun than the traditional kind. This match has a lighthearted focus, so go ahead and enter your marginally trained mutt. Held rain or shine in/by the upper pavilion at Lake Accotink Park, 7500 Accotink Park Rd, Springfield, Va. For more info, email Joanne at dog_4H@hotmail.com and to familiarize yourself with Rally Obedience, check out the AKC's website at http://www.akc.org/dic/events/rally/index.cfm

Sat 6/8 ???? CALVERT CO., MD: CHAOS(Chesapeake Hiking and Outdoor Society)is a group based in Annapolis that likes dogs and supports them being unleashed in suitable venues.
