The doggie social calendar starts to gear up with the advent of better weather, including a Newf Romp n' Swim at the Dog Beach of Downs Park in Pasadena, MD at 1pm on Sat 4/17.

Sun 3/28 7am, LEESBURG, VA: Colonial Newf Club's draft test at Oatlands Plantation http://www.cncnewfs.com/Calendar.htm . If you want to see what happens at one of these first hand, you can always volunteer to be a steward.

Sun 3/28 11am-2pm, BALTIMORE, MD: March for the Animals held by the MD SPCA http://www.mdspca.org/walkathon/walk_a_thon.htm at the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus. This one is HUGE! You don't have to walk the pleasant 1.5 mi route, just come and enjoy the games, vendors, entertainment, food, demos, $25 micro-chipping and especially the sights! And yes, there's free parking.

Sun & Mon, 3/28 & 3/29 8am-4pm, ANNAPOLIS, MD: The Potomac Valley Irish Wolfhound Club http://www.pviwc.org/Specialty.html has their regional specialty at Quiet Waters Park.

Fri- Sun, 4/2-4, CHANTILLY, VA: Super Pet Expo http://www.superpetexpo.com/index.php at the Dulles Expo Center has a plethora of activities, entertainment and products for you, your family and your dog who is also invited to attend.

Sat 4/3 MCLEAN, VA: Help clean up Turkey Run Park with the K9 Trailblazers http://www.k9trailblazers.org/turkey_run/tr_worktrip_040304.htm . Not only can you hike through this lovely park on the Potomac, you can pick up and haul trash too!

Sun 4/4 PRINCE FREDERICK, MD: Dog show, all breed and obedience at the Calvert Co Fairgrounds by Chesapeake Kennel Club http://www.infodog.com/clubs/2004241101.HTM .

Sun 4/4 2pm, SPRINGFIELD, VA: Lake Accotink Park http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/parks/accotink/events.htm (scroll down to date) hosts a spring bonnet contest, parade and bone hunt for dogs. $6 includes all this and a digital photo of your dog with the Easter Bunny.

Tues, 4/6 5- 8pm, ALEXANDRIA, VA: Doggie Happy Hour http://www.doggiehappyhour.com/ resumes at the Holiday Inn Select in Old Town every Tues & Th from 5- 8pm through October (more details in Recurring Events below). Enjoy the pup treats, people treats and special prices along with the incredible ambiance of a courtyard filled with excited dogs.

Fri 4/9 730pm, ALEXANDRIA, VA: Fido Friday Hike with NVHC http://members.aol.com/nvhc/ (scroll down to date) in downtown Old Town.

Sat 4/10 930am, ANNAPOLIS, MD: Disc Dogathon! Admire the canines of Skyhoundz flying through the air to catch discs or be brave and enter with your own pooch. Lots of activities going on and free park admission. If you haven't already been there, take the opportunity to check out the fenced, off-leash Dog Park and nearby Dog Beach.

Sat 4/24 11am, BOWIE, MD: Skyhoundz disc dog competition http://skyhoundz.com/localschedule.htm (scroll down to Md) at Acorn Hill Park, 3209 Stonybrook Dr (beside Bowie Community Center).

Sat 4/24 12N- 3pm, GAITHERSBURG, MD: The city of Gaithersburg puts on their Bark in the Park http://www.ci.gaithersburg.md.us/poi/default.asp?POI_ID=577&TOC=107;84;99;577; at Bohrer Park, Summit Hill Farm featuring a bone hunt, parade, dog trick trainer, obstacle course and photo booth, all for $8.

Sat & Sun 4/24-25, UPPER MARLBORO, MD: Cherry Blossom Classic Dog Show for ARBA (American Rare Breed Association) http://arba.org/ held at the Show Place Arena. This show features those rare breeds you don't often see around town and is a Specialty (meaning you should see more of them) for some, including Mini Australian Shepherds, Tibetan Mastiffs & Cane Corsos.

Sat 5/1 830 or 930am, RESTON, VA: Pet Fiesta http://petfiesta.org/welcome.cfm , and Mutt Strut http://www.spcanova.org/. There seems to be a discrepancy as to when this combo of pet fair and fundraising walk actually starts, so if you're planning to go you might want to check to see if they've reached an accord closer to the event date.

RECURRING EVENTS:
Every Tu and Th 5-8 pm ALEXANDRIA, VA: Doggie Happy Hour http://doggiehappyhour.com . Held on a spacious enclosed outdoor terrace every Tues and Thurs from 5-8pm (often runs later) from April through Oct, this is a remakable combination of Happy Hour and happy dogs. Free and cheap snacks (ie, all-you-can-eat wings $1.95, shrimp $4.95) and a farm wagon piled high with dog yummies combine with booze to make this a memorable social outing for people and canines alike. Dress ranges from cut-offs and a Tshirt to business attire and street parking can be easily found.

Every Wed 6-8pm ALEXANDRIA, VA: Yappy Hour (April- Sept) at St Elmo's Coffee Pub, treats provided by Hydrant Dog Barkery & Boutique http://www.hydrantdog.com/yappyhour/ .
Every Fri 7pm - ? ANNAPOLIS, MD: Newf Stroll at the City Dock, weather permitting.
