Subject: DC/Annapolis/Baltimore Area July '04 Dog Events

As usual, there's not much happening in July that's strictly dog related. However, many of the local parks have concert series that you can take your dog to and both of you can enjoy the music and a picnic. Lake Accotink, VA and Quiet Waters Park, MD are just two of the sites that welcome (or at least tolerate) your canine friend; check out your nearby parks.

If you'd like to hear poetry about our doggie friends, check out the free reading at the Brookland visitor center http://www.geocities.com/bawadc/ in Washington, DC on Wed 7/7 at 7pm. Unfortunately our honored friends aren't invited but you can hear odes to their nobility and peculiarities.

Th 7/1-Sun 7/4, WEST FRIENDSHIP, MD: Howard County Fairgrounds is the site for the Independence Cluster, four AKC all breed and obedience dog shows on one site starting Th through Sun, many vendors. Huge. Be aware that water is hard to find at these things for some reason. Bring your own, or a collapsible bowl and fill up in the restrooms. http://www.infodog.com/panels/md.htm

Sun 7/4 10am- 12noon, BALTIMORE, MD: Visionary Pets on Parade Registration at 9:30am. Animal fun! Animal prizes for lots of silly things, which always includes a costume contest, the more bizarre the better. Free. Lots of water thoughtfully provided. Hosted by the American Visionary Arts Museum (AVAM) http://avam.org/ in Federal Hill, this place is Weird Central of Baltimore. You'll see things here (ie grass growing on a pink car) you'll never see anywhere else. Bouffant hairdos, feather boas and rhinestone encrusted stretch pants will abound and the female contingent will be even more colorful. A multitude of events go on all day and if you can last that long, it's a fine place to view the fireworks at the Inner Harbor. NOTE: There's nothing on the website about this event but it has been confirmed.

Sun 7/4 630pm, ANNAPOLIS, MD: The Crabtown Canines will be marching in the 4th of July parade from Amos Garrett Blvd to the Market House http://pawsannapolis.com/ (phone 410-263-8683) http://www.capitalonline.com/comm_feature.html (scroll down).

Sat 7/10 1030am, YORK, PA: Disc Dog distance/accuracy competition at Memorial Park, Edgar & Rockdale Aves http://skyhoundz.com/localschedule.htm (scroll down to PA). There will be a freestyle clinic afterwards by MAD Dogs http://discdog.us .

Sat & Sun 7/10 & 11 8am- 8pm, BERRYVILLE, VA: Back to back AKC All Breed and Obedience Dog Shows by Shawnee Kennel Club at the Clarke Co Fairgrounds http://www.infodog.com/panels/va.htm

Mon 7/12 6pm, FREDERICK, MD: Take your dog to the baseball game (game starts at 705pm) and watch the Frederick Keys play the Lynchburg Hillcats. Pre and post game doggie activities include a chance to run the bases with your dog. Preregistration is required http://www.frederickkeys.com/smccal.cgi?team=fre&popup=275 .

Fri 7/16 7pm- 10pm, LEESBURG, VA: Sip wine and nibble treats while you and your dog enjoy the beautiful vistas over the Potomac at Tarara Winery to benefit HART (Homeless Animals Rescue Team) http://www.hart90.org/Events/tarara-2004-order-form.htm .

Fri 7/16 730pm, ALEXANDRIA, VA: Urban hike in Old Town with No Va Hiking Club http://members.aol.com/nvhc/

Sat 7/17 830am, SOLOMON'S ISLAND, MD: The intrepid souls of the Humane Society of Calvert County http://www.calvertcountyhumanesociety.org/2004PetDay5K.htm are daringly hosting their Pet Day 5K Run/Walk despite it being the middle of summer heat.

Sat 7/17 10am- 2pm, ARLINGTON, VA: Learn how to give your dog a therapeutic & relaxing massage http://www.pawsitivetouch.com/events.html .

Sat & Sun 7/24 & 25, HANOVER, PA: CNC's water workshop at Lake Codorus http://www.cncnewfs.com/Calendar.htm#JULY , details in the newsletter & flyer you probably misplaced.

Sun 7/25 9am, ALEXANDRIA, VA: All dogs, not just Scottish ones, are invited to the Virginia Scottish Games http://vascottishgames.org/ , a rather vaguely worded and uninformative site. More details were found (after some effort) at http://www.westierescue.com/eventdetail.asp?EventID=30 .
