It's getting dark early and starting to get cold, making it more difficult to get out and do fun things with your dog, but there's still some opportunities out there. Besides, your dog probably doesn't mind the cold and you can always buy a warmer coat. And hat. And gloves.

A Newf Romp n' Swim on Sat 11/13 at 1pm may test your chilly weather gear ( hopefully not) but your Newf will love it!

Fri- Sun, 11/5- 7, SALISBURY, MD: Three days of AKC dog shows at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center hosted by the Salisbury Maryland Kennel Club and Mispillion Kennel Club http://www.infodog.com/panels/md.htm .

Fri 11/5 730- 930pm, ALEXANDRIA, VA: Urban hike in Old Town starting at the King St Metro with No Va Hiking Club http://members.aol.com/nvhc/ (scroll down to date).

Sat 11/6 9am, ANNAPOLIS, MD: Got a disc dog or wondered what canine frisbee was all about? Meet with MAD Doggers (Mid Atlantic Disc Dogs) at Collison Field in Truxton Park http://www.ci.annapolis.md.us/government/depts/recr/directions.asp#truxtun for some casual fun & play.

Sat 11/6 12n, ANNAPOLIS, MD: The always revolting Maritime Republic of Eastport again attempts to assert its independence from tyranny of Annapolis in the Tug of War VII "Slaughter Across the Water " http://themre.org/tug2004/index.htm. The action starts at the crack o' noon at the city dock on the Annapolis side and Second Street on the Eastport side. A community party follows on Second Street featuring food, drink, sights, and music. Dogs are considered full citizens of the MRE and thus are encouraged to attend.

Sat 11/6 MCLEAN?, VA: Meet at Turkey Run Park for a fall foliage hike along the Potomac Heritage Trail with the K9 Trailblazers http://www.k9trailblazers.org/turkey_run/trfm_hike_110604.htm .

Sat 11/6 7- 11pm, STERLING, VA: Bow Wow Boogie at Cascades Fire Hall to benefit Va. German Shepherd Rescue http://www.shepherdrescue.org/pages/events.html. Wear your jeans, bring your dog and party hearty.

Fri - Sun, 11/12- 14, EASTON, MD: A myriad of activities and sights at the Waterfowl Festival http://www.waterfowlfestival.org/ including retriever demos. Not strictly a dog-focused event but said to be dog friendly and fun for you and your pet. Be forewarned that due to construction work on the Bay Bridge, you may end up snarled in traffic delays.

Sat 11/13 1pm PASADENA, MD: Newf Romp n' Swim on the Dog Beach at Downs Park http://www.aacounty.org/RecParks/Parks/downs_park/index.cfm .

Sat 11/13 10am, FAIRFAX, VA: Join GRREAT (Golden Retriever Rescue) http://www.grreat.org/calendar.htm & http://www.grreat.org/Docs/walkflier_nov03.pdf in a 3K walk starting at the rear lot of Webers Pet Supermarket. If your pet needs a tattoo, save gas by also getting it done, same time, same place, see below.

Sat 11/13 10am- 1pm, FAIRFAX, VA: The SPCA of Northern Virginia http://spcanova.org/ will be holding its twice-yearly pet tattoo clinic at Webers Pet Supermarket. Tattoos will be performed by Tommy and Nancy Mantlo from Richmond, well-known pet tattooists with over 25 years experience. This is a great opportunity to protect your pets from theft, or in case they get lost. You'll choose the alpha-numeric combination to be tattooed on your pet, and you'll choose the service to register it with. Price is a very reasonable $15 if you pre-reg and $18 for walk-ins.

Sat 11/13 2- 7pm, SILVER SPRING, MD: Greyhound Welfare http://www.greyhoundwelfare.org/eventdetail.php?eventkey=96 is hosting a blood drive for the Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank http://evbb.com/index1.html at Hefner Auditorium, 42 Oswego Ave. Not precisely a "fun" type event (although the dogs seem to enjoy the attention) but certainly a worthy cause.

Sun 11/14 10am- 4pm, WOODBRIDGE, VA: Freestyle (dance with your dog) seminar http://www.allaboutdogsinc.com/freestyle.htm at All About Dogs http://www.allaboutdogsinc.com/index.htm 14885 Persistence Lane.
