Subject: DC/Balto Area April '02 Dog Events

Tues 4/2 -Yappy Hour (Doggie Happy Hour) starts at the Holiday Inn Select, Old Town, Alexandria, Va. Go to http://oldtownhis.com for exact address and phone #. Held on a spacious enclosed outdoor terrace every Tues and Thurs from 5-8pm (often runs later)through Oct, this is a remakable combination of Happy Hour and happy dogs. Free and cheap snacks (ie, all-you-can-eat wings $1.95, shrimp $4.95) and a farm wagon piled high with dog yummies combine with booze to make this a memorable social outing for people and canines alike. Dress ranges from cut-offs and a Tshirt to business attire and street parking can easily be found.

Sat 4/6 and Sun 4/7 10am-6pm -Super Pet Expo, Chantilly, Va http://superpetexpo.com. Vendors, rescue groups, demonstrations etc. You can bring your dog. I took Gomez to the one in Balto and got stopped about 500 times (You got a saddle for that thing? How much does it weigh? Is that a St Bernard, Great Pyrenees, Border Collie, pony, dairy cow? etc)

Sat 4/20 8am-5pm -Old Dominion Kennel Club Show, Morven Park, Leesburg, Va, all-breed conformation and obedience. More info at http://members.aol.com/kblairh/spring02.html . Note: they say unentered dogs aren't allowed on the grounds but I, personally, have never paid any attention to this prohibition and have always brought my dog (including a mixed breed who didn't remotely resemble anything registered by the AKC) and have never been challenged. If I had been, I would have said the dog was entered in obedience. Bring your own water dish (I use a folding one) that you can fill in the bathrooms because they never have water out at these things.

Sun 4/21 8am-5pm -Baltimore County Kennel Club. Same as above, only moved up the road to the Balto Co. Fairgrounds at Timonium, Md. Go to
http://www.infodog.com/clubs/2002153001.HTM for more.

Mon 4/22-Sun 4/28 Newfoundland Club of America National Specialty, hosted by the NewPenDel Newf club http://www.geocities.com/newpendelnewfclub/2002.html at the Clarion Hotel, 1700 Harrisburg Pike, Carlisle, Pa (just SW of Harrisburg). The website makes it sound like you have to download forms and other hassles to make a hotel reservation but just call the Clarion/Quality Inn et al at 800-424-6423 for what I found to be very pleasant and efficient service.

The National is the biggest annual collection of Newfs, Newf people, Newf products, Newf shows etc. If you ever thought of getting that Newf whatnot or seeing what dogs from some breeder look like, this is the place. You will never see so many of the webfooted slobberhounds in one place. They hold them in different areas of the US so it won't be so close again for years, worth making it a priority. Of course the dogs can come, whether they're entered in anything or not, and all the hotels accept them for this.

Sat 4/27 11am-Skyhoundz Frisbee Dog competition, Acorn Hill Park, 3209 Stonybrook Dr, (beside Bowie Community Center) Bowie, Md. More info call Annette LeHew 301-464-1737 or http://skyhoundz.com.

Sat 4/27 830am-2pm, Grasonville, Md Tail-Waggin' Trail Walk $10 minimum donation, benefits Grateful Paws, Inc. Held at the Cross-Island Trail, Kent Island. Directions in the brochure state "Take Rt 50 to Exit 41, Kent Narrows West. Trail entrance is by Kent Narrows Factory Stores (vacant blue outlets)". Annoyingly, no web site, phone # or map is provided but here's a site I found for a map http://bikewashington.org/trails/crossIsland/.

Sun 4/28 10am-4pm Montgomery Co. Humane Society Paws in the Park dog walk/fundraiser, Wheaton Regional Park, Wheaton, Md .
http://mchumane.org/pawsintheparkmain.htm Also features music, vendors, demos etc.

Sun 4/28 9am-? : Humane Society of Charles Co. Dog Walk/Games, Gilbert Run Park, LaPlata, Md http://humanesocietycc.org/dogwalk.html

Every Tues and Thurs 5pm - 8pm April 2nd through Oct-Yappy Hour, Alexandria, Va. description above.

Every Fri 7pm -? Annapolis, Md- Newf Stroll at the City Dock, weather permitting.
