October is jam packed with tons of canine fun events, with Sat the 26th probably being the busiest day of the year in the doggie social calendar. Start thinking about a costume for your pooch for Howl-a-ween. If you get desperate enough, you can always spray paint a yellow circle on a white Tshirt and go as a fried egg.

Sat 10/5 10 am-4 pm, BELAIR, MD: The Colonial Newfoundland Club's Fall Fun Day http://www.cncnewfs.com/Calendar.htm. The Newfoundland Social Event of the Season!!! See the CNC newsletter for details.Oh all right-I know you misplaced it. It's at the Harford Glen Environmental Ctr (same as past years), 502 W. Wheel Rd, Bel Air, MD 21015. Take I 95, exit on Rt 24 toward Bel Air, go to 3rd traffic light and turn left onto West Wheel Rd which takes you into the park after about a mile. Park cars in gravel lot next to pond (per newsletter instructions) making sure you see a lot of Newfy license plates and bumper stickers. And Newfs. Pack a lunch, bring a dessert to share. Fun matches, games, contests, trail walk (carts welcome), CGC/TDI certification, indoor plumbing and lots of hair and drool.

Sat 10/5 and Sun 10/6, 10am- 330pm, TIMONIUM, MD: Dog Washathon to benefit the MD SPCA. This time YOU wash your dog using the indoor wash apparatus and paraphenalia (shampoo, hair dryers etc) provided by the Pet Depot, 2151 Greenspring Dr, 410-561-0931 for $12.

Sat 10/5 and Sun 10/6, WALKERSVILLE, MD: Potomac Valley Bernese Mountain Dog Club's double header http://www.pvbmdc.org/02_draft_match.htm. Conformation and obedience on Sat and Draft tests on Sun.

Sun 10/6 10am, ANNAPOLIS, MD: Mystery hike with your dog and CHAOS (Chesapeake Hiking and Outdoor Society) http://jenzakayaker.tripod.com/CHAOS/id3.html . Meet at Graul's on Rowe Blvd.

Sun 10/6 12 noon, FAIRFAX, VA: Paws for a Cause 3K walk through the shady streets of Fairfax to benefit Fairfax Pets On Wheels. Meet at Webers Pet Supermarket.http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/service/aaa/html/POW.htm

NOTE: Sun 10/6 is the Feast of St Anthony, patron saint of animals, and some churches hold a Blessing of the Animals on this day. Below are a few of them.

3pm DAVIDSONVILLE, MD: The Chapel of All Hallows Parish, 864 West Central Ave, Davidsonville, Md. Last year they had a few llamas and a kangaroo in addition to the usual suspects.

If you bring your dog, bring water and/or a bowl.

Sat 10/12 11am-2pm COLUMBIA, MD: Walk to benefit Animal Advocates of Howard Co http://www.animal-advocates.org/index.html at Lake Elkhorn. Flyball demo, displays, food,$15 micro chipping, canine massage and caricatures, pet communicator, breed rescue etc and former Oriole Boog Powell.

Sun 10/13 12 noon- 3pm, ELLICOTT CITY/COLUMBIA MD: Stroll n' Roll- walk around Centennial Park to benefit Fidos For Freedom which provides therapy assistance dogs to those who need them. They're asking for a reasonable $10 registration fee http://fidosforfreedom.org/ .

Sat 10/19 10am- ?, ROCKVILLE, MD: Dogtoberfest frisbee competition hosted by National Capital Air Canines at Lake Needwood, 15700 Needwood Lake Circle, Rockville, MD. Web site is http://discdog.com but they haven't updated anything there for a while, although I've been assured this event will take place. Try emailing ncac@discdog.com.

Sat 10/19 11am- 3pm, BOWIE, MD: Bowie Dog Fest http://www.dogfest.org/event.cfm at Allen Pond Park. Includes a 1 mi Walk Against Canine Cancer ($18 reg fee), Doggie Fun Fair (contests, displays, food) and On Stage Dog Expo (agility/flyball demos, Search and Rescue, Police dogs etc). Sounds like quite a bash.

Sun 10/20 11am- 3pm, REISTERSTOWN, MD: Walk to benefit the Humane Society of Balto Co. http://hsbcanimals.org/events.htm .Located on 365 acres of beautiful rolling hillsides and fields, an agility course is available to try out, vendor alley, displays, Bob Turk of Ch 13 and (shudder) vegetarian food. They want you to register and fork out at least $25 but you don't have to.

Fri 10/25 and Sat 10/26, 7am- 630 pm, LEESBURG, VA: The Middleburg Kennel Club http://www.middleburgkc.com/mkcshows.html AKC dog shows at Oatlands Plantation.CNC supported entry and tailgate party on the Sat the 26th. If you take your dog, bring your own water or at least a bowl to fill up in the rest rooms because they never have water available at these things.

Sat 10/26 930am POTOMAC, MD: Montgomery Co SPCA http://www.mcspca.org/dogwalk/details.asp Dog Walk, Pet Fair, lunch, auction in conjunction with Potomac Day celebrations and parade.

Sat 10/26 11am- 3pm, ANNAPOLIS, MD: Howl-O-Ween Barkin' Bash at Quiet Waters Park. This one's going to be a riot-costume contests, fun events, ask-the-trainer, music, all kinds of things going on and free admission to the park. Nothing on their website yet (9/27/02) but a phone call to them at 410-833-2387 confirmed that this event is a go.

Sat 10/26 7pm- 11pm GAITHERSBURG, MD: Dances With Dogs put on by the Montgomery Co Humane Society http://www.danceswithdogs01.homestead.com/ at the Gaithersburg Washingtonian Marriott. Dancing, dining( a tasty-sounding menu), auctions, animal caricaturist, doggie fashion show, and more-all for only $100. Dress is business casual for people; dogs can wear whatever they like.

Sat 10/26 and Sun 10/27 930 am, BEAR/GLASGOW DE: Weight pull, proceeds to benefit the Salvation Army toys for tots program http://www.iwpa.net/calendar.htm .

Sun 10/27 12 noon -6 pm, BALTIMORE, MD: 3rd Annual Howl-A-Ween Dog Festival in Canton at The Can Company on Boston St. Dine al fresco with your dog, vendors, info, displays, entertainment. Fancy dress dog costume contest with 5 categories-scariest, funniest, most Baltimorean, most original and matching Dog and Human, $10 fee to enter each category, proceeds to Canton's dog park.

Thurs 10/31 5pm- 8pm, ALEXANDRIA, VA: Halloween costume contest at Yappy Hour in the courtyard of the Holiday Inn Select in Old Town Alexandria http://doggiehappyhour.com/Event%20Schedule.htm

Thurs 10/31- Sun 11/3, 8am- 6pm, VIRGINIA BEACH, VA: Four more days of AKC conformation and obedience hosted by various kennel clubs at the Pavilion, Va Bch Convention Ctr http://infodog.com .

Every Tu and Th 5-8 pm ALEXANDRIA, VA: Yappy Hour- http://doggiehappyhour.com . Held on a spacious enclosed outdoor terrace every Tues and Thurs from 5-8pm (often runs later) through Oct, this is a remakable combination of Happy Hour and happy dogs. Free and cheap snacks (ie, all-you-can-eat wings $1.95, shrimp $4.95) and a farm wagon piled high with dog yummies combine with booze to make this a memorable social outing for people and canines alike. Dress ranges from cut-offs and a Tshirt to business attire and street parking can be easily found.
