Egypt to air series based on anti-Semitic tract

CAIRO, Egypt – Egyptian state television will broadcast a 30-part series based on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, an infamous anti-Semitic tract that the show's creator and star says "reveals the Zionist schemes to seize Palestine."

Egyptian television began advertising "Horseman Without a Horse" this week, which it said will be broadcast during the first half of Ramadan, Islam's holiest month and a traditional time for serialized television specials. Ramadan starts in early November.

Television officials did not return calls yesterday seeking comment.

Historians long have dismissed the protocols as a forgery concocted by Russian Czar Nicholas II's secret police to blame that country's problems on Jews.

The Skeptic's Dictionary Web site said the document – privately printed in 1897 and made public in 1905 – was copied from a novel by Hermann Goedsche, who claimed a secret group of rabbis was plotting to take over the world. Goedsche, in turn, based his story on Maurice Joly's "Dialogues in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu," which was about a plot to oppose Napoleon III (*1852 +1870).

Israeli media and Jewish groups have criticized the series, starring and produced by well-known Egyptian actor Mohammed Sobhi, since plans for its production were revealed last year.

The criticism prompted Egypt's information minister, Safwat el-Sherif, to convene a special committee to review the script, which was held to not be anti-Semitic.

Egypt's state-run, or heavily state-influenced, media often have been accused of carrying anti-Semitic material.
