Subject: saw Will for the first time 2 days ago--Share your stories

I saw Will Oldham on Friday (2 days ago) for the first time. I See a Darkness was awesome (I was mesmerized by Will), as was New Partner. I also liked that some my familiar favorites were played differently, with a new energy. However, the show was not at all what I was expecting.
I really thought the show would be a more intimate experience between the band and the audience. I have never met anyone, besides the person who turned me on to Will Oldham, who has even heard his music, so I suppose I should not have had any expectations at all...but you know how the human mind works.
I have been to many different types of shows in my time, most of them large rock type concerts and small folk shows, but a few more indie-punk kind of things as well, so I was not unfamiliar with the crowd I met at BPB the other night. However, I didn't expect the crowd to be as "indie" influenced as it turned out to be, or as young. As unfortunate, or pretentious as this might sound-- I started wondering while the band was playing if some of the people weren't there just to have a place to drink beer away from their parents for an evening, or to be seen as part of the Louisville underground scene. To put it bluntly, many did not seem to be very taken in by the music they were supposedly there to see.
I have always connected with what I see as a very intimate and dreamy quality of Will's music, and I guess what I hoped for the other night was to make that connection in person. I did make it once, during "I See a Darkness", and was extremely glad for it.
Most of the time though, the music had a "harder" sound, and Will's vocals were somewhat drowned out. I realize this was due in part to the venue itself, being small and crowded, without a professional sound set-up or stage, and possibly to the atmosphere of the crowd.
I would like to see Will Oldham again, but would like to know beforehand if my experience on Friday was typical, or if his style of playing and the "feel" of the audience varies from one show to the next. To any of you that have seen more than one show, especially in more than one city or Europe: I would find your input to be of the most interest.
One more point before I take off: How large of an audience does Will generally draw? Since I will undoubtedly be traveling if I see him, knowing that info might help me to decide what type of venue I would most like to see him. If any of you here in the U.S. on the East Coast have seen him at a venue you particularly enjoyed, let me know, if he plays there again I might like to check it out.
Thank you to anyone who took the time to read all this, and I would greatly enjoy reading your personal experiences with Will Oldham/Palace/BPB, so respond if you've got the time. -----------------Miranda
