I think an interesting tack might be his place in a "folk" (to use the word loosely) tradition. He has made it his enterprise to emphasize an "other" tradition of artists; the brilliant records that have been overlooked while a canonical tradition was being consolidated. Consider the artists he's covered, and their position vis-a-vis a canon of songwriters: Kevin Coyne, Kate Wolf, Dick Gaughan, John Phillips (post-Mamas & Papas). He has acted as much as an advocate, or a re-shaper of the canon, as he has as an original songwriter within the canon.
