I think the surge in popularity and use of the internet also helps mid-major programs attract more talented players. Today, a prospective athlete can do tons of research with very little time and energy.

Ten years ago info on mid-majors was only in the high school counslors office or intermittently on a 1-line box score in the sports pages.... whereas Duke, Stanford et al... have the conference standings and full-blown stats listed every day of the week, regular newspaper articles, and editorials about the teams shoe contract.
