Right now it's any port in a storm for the Aggies. If the opportunity presents itself to join a conference for football only, USU will jump at it. I expect there will be another invitation to the Aggies from the Sun Belt Conference (perhaps over the winter) before one is received from the WAC. Remaining an independent is a lonely road. There is no conference championship or bowl game to play for. That makes it difficult for the players and inhibits recruiting.

The Aggies will also find it increasingly difficult to schedule enough 1-A teams to meet minimum NCAA requirements, because the number of independent teams is evaporating. Only Notre Dame can be viable as an indy.

So it's watch and wait for USU. Their football schedule is pretty much set for 2002 and partially set for 2003. If USU is not in a 1-A football conference in 2004, I think it's big trouble for the university.

While Fresno St. leaving the WAC may present an opening for USU, it's not the only possibility. San Jose St. could drop football altogether. I also think there is going to be some conference realignment that could shuffle the Conference USA, Sun Belt and WAC decks.
