Subject: Crown of Thorn's flowers

I received a couple of Crown of Thorn cuttings two or three years ago. Since then I've taken more cuttings to fill out the cactus dish with more starts. Not knowing anything about this plant, I followed the advice of the lady who gave me the starts and placed the cuttings in water until they finally sprouted roots and have done the same since then. I discovered today from reading a couple of sites that isn't the preferred method. I see letting the cutting dry out a day or so, then placing in peat moss and sand is preferred. Does anyone know if this truly works better than the "glass of water" method I've been using? Plus, and this comes down to my main question, one of my two recent cuttings sprouted flowers! In the two or three years since I've had this plant going, no flowers have ever sprouted. I didn't know it could sprout flowers! Reading up on this plant today, it appears this plant can produce flowers year round. The plant receives bright indirect sunlight almost all day and direct sunlight a couple of hours or so. Since I live up in Alaska, the hours of sunlight vary greatly from winter to summer. The plant seems to be thriving, except for the lack of blooms. Anyone have any suggestions, or have I misunderstood the amount of blooming the plant does. Thank you.
