Subject: U of Toledo helmet

Ive resided in Toledo my entire life. 73 i was in high school and went to all their games. The helmets were blue and striping as the pic with a yellow football. Been a while cant remember all the circumstances but inside the football was the name Tony January. He passed away either during summer practice or some other reason as i said can remember all the details. But that was what was in the football. Sorry no pics to prove it but thats what it was.
Perhaps archives of the Toledo Blade newspaper may help.

Thank you for the report; I'll mention that at the website and see if anybody can come up with some additional information. Doing a search for that name did bring up the phrase "Springfield South dedicated its homecoming game to Tony January, who died in University of Toledo football practice in September" at one of those password-protected newspaper archive sites, so that does appear to be a promising lead. I have been unable to find his name in any of the University of Toledo football history stuff, though, which seems a bit strange. I wonder if he might have been someone trying out for the team, as opposed to someone already on the team.
