Golden Eagles fall at Valparaiso for their fourth straight defeat.

VALPARAISO, Ind. -- Things are going from bad to worse in Oral Roberts' basketball season.

They went from bad to worse at Valparaiso on Thursday night, and then got a little better -- but not nearly good enough for the Golden Eagles.

A frantic finish wasn't enough to overcome an 18-point deficit as the Eagles lost 84-73 to fall further out of contention for the Mid-Continent Conference regular-season title.

ORU (13-9, 6-5) lost its fourth straight game and fifth out of the last six. After leading the conference only 13 days ago, the Eagles fell into a fifth-place tie with Chicago State.

Valparaiso (12-10, 9-4) won its eighth game in the last nine and climbed to within percentage points of league-leading Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. Junior guard Ali Berdiel scored 17 points to lead five Crusaders in double figures.

The Eagles remain winless at Valpo, losing for the eighth straight time, and trail in the overall series 10-8.

ORU freshman Ken Tutt matched his career high by scoring 28 points for the third straight game, and broke the school's freshman scoring record. He has 439 points.

He scored 25 in the second half, helping the Eagles claw back from a 46-28 deficit. He made seven straight shots in one stretch -- including two 3-pointers -- and closed the deficit to 60-55 with over six minutes left.

ORU got within five again with under a minute left, but Valpo made 10-of-12 foul shots down the stretch. The Crusaders made 20-of-26 from the charity stripe in the second half and 28-of-38 for the game, getting 22 more chances than the Eagles.

Freshman forward Caleb Green matched a career high with 15 rebounds and added 20 points for his 11th double-double. Senior Josh Atkinson scored six points and became the 23rd player in school history to score 1,000 points, but hit just 2-of-9 from 3-point range.

The Eagles struggled as a team, hitting just 40 percent. It started early. They missed seven of their first eight shots, fell into a 7-0 hole and never led. Tutt and Atkinson were a combined 2-of-12 in the first half.

Valpo freshman Jimmie Miles threw in a wild 3-pointer to end the half and the Crusaders led 38-28. They opened the second half with eight unanswered points and had their largest lead.
