Atkinson looks to shoot--Tulsa World

Atkinson looks to shoot

ORU guard has been in a 3-point slump lately, hopes to snap out of it.

Josh Atkinson said he's tired of wondering where his offense has gone. He's not going to do it anymore.

"I'm just going to shoot the ball. That's what I do, and that's what feels natural," says the Oral Roberts senior guard.

"I'm going to take my mind out of it and let my body take over."

Atkinson ranks as ORU's fifth-leading career 3-point shooter with 194. But he's shooting less than 20 percent (12-of-67) from behind the arc over the past 11 games.

That's after making 15-of-28 in the first three conference games when his average peaked at 13.3 points per game. Since then, he's fallen to 11.6.

"Josh does the little things that help us win besides scoring points," said ORU coach Scott Sutton. "Everybody knows he can shoot the ball better than he has the last 10 games. I'm sure he's putting a little pressure on himself and sometimes, when you're thinking about your shot, it's not going to go in. But I have confidence that he's going to get on a little run that will help us win some games this week."

The Golden Eagles (16-9, 9-5) can share the regular-season Mid-Continent Conference title by winning their final two games.

But they'll have to climb a small mountain Thursday when they visit first-year league member Centenary in Shreveport, La.

The Gents (15-10, 9-5) can also share the regular-season title and haven't lost at home all season. Dating back to last year, Centenary has won 17 straight at the Gold Dome and is 47-8 over five seasons with coach Kevin Johnson.

"If you protect your home court and win a few road games, you put yourself in a position to win the conference title," Sutton said. "They've got a great senior and five good ones who will be playing their last home game, so it's going to be a real difficult challenge for us."

Centenary senior guard Andrew Wisniewski is a top contender for Mid-Con player of the year honors, averaging 22.4 points per game.

Earlier in Tulsa, Wisniewski scored 19 first-half points and 26 overall, but ORU rallied for an 85-71 win.

The 6-foot-3 Atkinson has blossomed as a defender and all-around player this season. He'll take a turn at guarding the 6-foot-3 Wisniewski.

Freshman Ken Tutt has taken up ORU's scoring slack with seven straight 25-plus scoring games, the longest such streak in the nation this season.

The Eagles end the regular season Saturday, hosting Southern Utah. Even if they win their last two games, they aren't likely to get the top seed in the conference tourney (March 7-9 in Kansas City, Mo.) unless they win the regular-season title outright.

A split would probably mean the third or fourth seed.
