Tutt's effort helps Eagles snap streak

Freshman guard scores career-best 30 to dump Leathernecks.

MACOMB, Ill. -- Technical difficulties made it impossible for radio listeners to hear Oral Roberts' best five minutes of basketball this month.

Freshman Ken Tutt played the best five minutes of his stellar career. And nobody associated with ORU minded that they came against the Mid-Continent Conference's worst team.

Tutt scored 20 straight second-half points and finished with a career-high 30 as ORU pulled out a 74-66 win at Western Illinois on Saturday, snapping a four-game losing streak, its worst in 2 1/2 years.

"We had to win and get some confidence back and Ken put us on his back," said ORU coach Scott Sutton.

ORU (14-9, 7-5) had lost five of its last six games and hadn't won since Jan. 22.

The Eagles shot poorly in the first half and trailed 43-36 with 12:53 left, but Tutt's 3-pointer capped an 8-0 run that gave the Eagles their first lead of the second half.

He went on to make six more shots without a miss, including two 3-pointers and a free throw to complete a three-point play, for a 61-53 lead with 2:21 left.

An equipment malfunction caused KCFO's radio broadcast to be interrupted almost exclusively from the 6 1/2-minute mark to 1:24.

Tutt scored 15 points in that span, prompting ORU radio voice Dave Garrett to quip, "We may need a technical malfunction more often."

After missing 11 of his first 15 shots, Tutt finished 10-of-21 with five 3-pointers and 5-of-5 from the foul line.

"He was unbelievable," Sutton said. "We all struggled for the first 30 minutes. It seemed like we couldn't make a shot, and then Ken turned it on like he did at (Valparaiso). He's a great shooter and his teammates did a great job of getting him the ball."

Tutt scored 25 of his 28 points in the second half of Thursday's loss at Valparaiso.

He has scored 26, 28, 28, 28 and 30 points in his last five games.

Following a recent trend, the Eagles shot poorly overall, hitting 43 percent from the field.

Their last four games have been their worst in shooting percentage since November.

Nevertheless, they stayed in the running for a high seed in the conference tourney and probably ended Western's hopes of qualifying.

The Leathernecks (3-22, 1-12) trail Oakland by three full games for the eighth and last spot.

ORU moved into a three-way tie for fourth with Chicago State, which upset Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis, and Missouri-Kansas City, which lost at Valpo. ORU's sixth road win of the season tied for the most since 1983-84.

The Eagles have three of their last four at home, starting with Chicago State on Thursday.
