Youngsters power ORU over Oakland

Tutt increases string of performances of 25 or more points to seven.

Oral Roberts University seems to have a bright basketball future, but on Saturday night its three youngest stars played like the future is now.

Freshmen Ken Tutt and Caleb Green and sophomore Jonathan Bluitt combined to score 66 points -- including all 46 in the second half -- as the Eagles rallied for a rousing 84-75 homecoming win over Oakland (Mich.) before 7,443 spectators fans and a regional television audience.

Tutt scored 25 points, Green added 24 and Bluitt scored 17. ORU (16-9, 9-5) rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit to stay in contention for the Mid-Continent Conference regular-season title.

The Eagles moved into a three-way tie for second place, one-half game behind Valparaiso, which lost at Southern Utah 75-58 Saturday night. ORU can tie for the title by winning its remaining games -- at Centenary on Thursday night and at home to Southern Utah next Saturday.

Tutt had his seventh straight game with at least 25 points. Green also had 10 rebounds for his 13th double-double. The 5-foot-9 Bluitt, ORU's smallest starter, added eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

All three provided a spark after the Eagles fell behind 52-40 with 17:15 left. So did university president Dr. Richard Roberts. With 17:45 left, he and wife, Lindsay, donned capes and moved from their usual seats in the south end zone to join the Mabee Maniacs, the student section in the north end.

"They came and got us at halftime and told us they wanted us to sit with them," Roberts said. "They got us T-shirts and capes to wear."

ORU's partisan crowd roared its approval for the Eagles as they started their comeback.

"The crowd was terrific. They really played the part of the sixth man," said ORU coach Scott Sutton.

Bad luck accompanied Oakland's decline from preseason league favorite to eighth place, but the Grizzlies (11-16, 5-10) played like contenders.

Led by Mike Helms with 22 points and Rawle Marshall with 20, they shot 61 percent from the field in the first half and made nine of their first 18 from 3-point range.

Oakland led 66-56 with 8:59, but ORU ran off 10 straight points. Green sank a pair of free throws that tied the game for the first time in the second half and he scored eight of the next 10 points.

His two free throws at 4:26 gave ORU its first lead of the half and the Eagles were ahead to stay.
