Green and Tutt combine to score 51 points, but ORU falls short at Centenary.

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Andrew Wisniewski drained a heavily guarded 3-pointer from approximate NBA range with 3.9 seconds left as Centenary nipped Oral Roberts 71-68 in a pivotal Mid-Continent Conference basketball game Thursday night.

Winsniewski scored 22 of his 26 points in the second half, matching his point total from an 85-71 loss to the Golden Eagles in Tulsa earlier this season.

ORU freshman guard Ken Tutt scored 26 points, extending the nation's longest streak of 25-plus scoring games to eight, and freshman forward Caleb Green scored 25. But the Eagles got only a combined 17 points from six others who participated.

Centenary (16-10, 10-5) moved into a first-place tie in the tightly packed Mid-Con race while knocking the Eagles (16-10, 9-6) into fourth place.

The Eagles lost their bid to get the top seed in the conference tournament, but can still tie for the conference title if the three league leaders lose their final conference games.

ORU can assure itself of no worse than the fifth seed by winning its home finale Saturday night against Southern Utah.

Centenary shot 65 percent (17-of-26) in the second half and led by as many as nine points. ORU scored eight straight points after trailing 68-60 with 3:30 left, and had a chance to get the lead when Wisniewski missed the front of a 1-and-1 with 45 seconds left.

The Eagles ran a play to free up Tutt on the baseline, but he missed from 15 feet. ORU coach Scott Sutton said he thought Tutt was fouled across the arm, but the referees didn't blow the whistle and Centenary rebounded with 20 seconds left.

Instead of calling a timeout, the Gents permitted Wisniewski to dribble away most of the remaining time. He dribbled the ball twice between his legs with ORU's 6-foot-3 Josh Atkinson guarding, and then stepped back and swished a shot over Atkinson.

Jonathan Bluitt missed an open 3-pointer for the Eagles as time expired.

ORU assistant Corey Williams estimated the distance of Wisniewski's shot at 25 feet. NBA range is 23 feet, nine inches.

Sutton said, "He's a great player and he made a great shot. What a way to go out on Senior Night. Centenary obviously plays great at home, but it's still a disappointment not to win and get a chance to play for the conference title."

Centenary finished 13-0 in the Gold Dome this season and won its 18th straight over on its home court over two years while breaking ORU's three-game winning streak.

"It's important to play well at home Saturday night," Sutton said.
