Mid-Continent Conference struggles to find right spot for its postseason tournament--NW Indiana Post Tribune
In 2005, the Mid-Con Tournament will move to Tulsa and play in its 11th venue in 20 years. Pending approval of the Union High School board in Tulsa in July, the event will be played at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center, a 5,600-seat arena on a high school campus. The Activity Center, a $22 million building, opened in January.

The tournament site and format has been a perennial noose around the Mid-Con’s neck. Balancing the needs of the student athletes while trying to maximize exposure for the league and get people in the arenas to watch the game is a challenge for every Division I conference.

ORU's Green grabs 22 rebounds, scores 29 points in Eagles' regular-season finale.

Even if Oral Roberts had tried to throw this game, freshman Caleb Green would have rebounded it.

As it is, the Golden Eagles didn't shoot very well on Senior Night. But not to worry. Green rebounded everything in sight and put it back in the basket.

He had 22 boards, the most by an ORU player in 30 years, and scored 29 points as the Golden Eagles downed Southern Utah 84-73 in the regular-season finale for both teams before 6,743 at the Mabee Center.

ORU made just 41.8 percent of its shots to Southern Utah's 55.1 percent -- 33 percent (9-of-27) in the second half. But Green outrebounded the visitors almost by himself.

He had two fewer rebounds than the 24 Southern Utah had as a team.

"Caleb was dominant on the glass," ORU coach Scott Sutton said. "It was the best performance I think I may have ever seen. His 22 rebounds were probably the biggest reason we won on a night we didn't shoot the ball very well, especially in the second half."

That and the 18 turnovers the Eagles forced by applying fullcourt pressure. Southern Utah made 11 of its final 12 shots of the first half to turn a 20-7 deficit into a 34-30 lead, but ORU forced four straight turnovers and regained the lead by running off 10 straight points.

Southern Utah (10-17, 6-10 in the Mid-Continent Conference) led one time in the second half, at 50-49, but Josh Atkinson and Ken Tutt scored back-to-back treys and the Eagles were ahead to stay.

Tutt had his string of 25-plus scoring games stopped at eight, the longest in the nation this season, but still scored in double figures (with 14 points) for the 25th time in 27 games.

Atkinson, a senior, found his 3-point shooting stroke on Senior Night. The fifth-leading 3-point shooter in school history made 4-of-9 from behind the arc to score 12 points. The four 3-pointers were the most Atkinson has had in a game since Jan. 8.

ORU (17-10, 10-6) assured itself of no worse than the fifth seed in the Mid-Continent Conference tourney, which opens next Sunday at Kemper Arena in Kansas City.

With losses by Indiana-Purdue and Centenary on Saturday night, the Eagles can still tie for the regular-season Mid-Con title if Chicago State upsets Valparaiso Tuesday night.

Green had 20 points and 11 rebounds in the first half. His 14th double-double -- double digits in points and rebounds -- was assured with 4:10 left in the first half.

It was only the eighth 20-point, 20-rebound game by an ORU player in school history and the first in six years. Green had the most rebounds by an ORU played since Eddie Woods snagged 24 against UT-Pan American on Jan. 26, 1974.

"It didn't even feel like 22 rebounds," Green said. "The ball was there and I just grabbed it. I've got to find a way to help my team, and I guess it's rebounding, if that's what helps the team."
