Green, Tutt both named first-team all-conference.

Oral Roberts coach Scott Sutton said he's glad he wasn't permitted to vote for his own players for Mid-Continent Conference basketball honors.

Sutton wouldn't have known which of his talented freshmen to choose -- guard Ken Tutt or forward Caleb Green.

"I would have voted it a tie, co-newcomers of the year," Sutton said with a chuckle. "They both had great years."

Tutt and Green made Mid-Con history Thursday by being the first freshman teammates voted to the all-conference team, said Cory Rogers, ORU media relations director.

Tutt edged Green for newcomer of the year, and both were on the all-newcomer team.

"They're very deserving and I'm excited for them," Sutton said. "I'd have been disappointed if they weren't on the first team because they both had sensational years."

Together, they fueled ORU's surprisingly strong bid for the regular-season Mid-Con title in what was expected to be a rebuilding year. The Eagles tied for second place in the league and had an eight-game winning streak during the season.

Tutt, the sharpshooting guard from Garland, Texas, ranked 19th nationally in scoring with 20.7 points per game and ran off eight straight 25-plus games, the nation's longest streak of its kind this season.

Tutt needs only three points to break Richard Fuqua's 34-year-old school freshman scoring record.

Green, the 6-foot-7 Memorial High product, led the league in rebounds (9.9) and shooting percentage (.598) and ranked seventh in scoring (17.3).

He scored a season-high 33 points in a game at Missouri-Kansas City and had 22 rebounds against Southern Utah last Saturday, the highest one-game total for an ORU player in 30 years.

Green and Tutt were the only underclassmen on the all-conference team. They were joined by seniors Odell Bradley of Indiana-Purdue, Michael Watson of UMKC, Mike Helms of Oakland (Mich.) and Andrew Wisniewski of Centenary.

Bradley, who scored 41 points in each of IUPUI's wins over ORU, was the player of the year.

Coach of the year was Chicago State's Kevin Jones. He guided the Cougars to their most wins (11) since 1989 and highest Mid-Con finish (sixth) since joining the league in 1994.

ORU (17-10) plays UMKC at 2:15 p.m. Sunday in the first round of the Mid-Con Tournament at Kemper Arena in Kansas City.
