true poem

The lights began to flicker whilst the sky burned charcoal gray
Leaves flipped in their pale agony of a drought now pushed away.
The rain poured down in sheets so dark, its touch must be a sin
As the cool, clear sudden moisture fell down to seek the skin.

The clock foretold three more hours till my workday’s done.
I looked forward to every flicker to cease my typist’s run.
The sky was dark and colors all so clear, the rain returned once more.
“Ladies and gentlemen, do remain calm… Get away from those doors!”

Herded in our many languages through the factory’s halls still lit
Pressed against an interior wall and pray that we aren’t hit.
There came a sudden hiss so loud, the lights burnt their last beam…
The lights came on only to die for good with the wind’s awful scream.

Cell phones down, pay phones down, no way to communicate.
The shriek of the National Weather Service told us to just wait.
Busy machinery, now silenced, looked odd and out of place-
Moments before hustling and working at a breakneck pace.

Confusion and chaos and disbelief as the workers wander around.
The Spanish-speaking couldn’t understand just what were those sounds…
Standing there in darkness till the winds swept through and by
The rain came down in drums of thunder as we looked toward the sky.

Though we were spared the tornado did come and passed by our building’s wall
Other buildings surrounding us were twisted- shattered in their fall.
Cars were flipped and signals ripped and shopping carts on the interstate…
Power lines dangling, emergency crews scrambling… some muttering of fate.

I drove home through twisted metal and shards of wire and wood
Amazed that next to Oblivion, we workers silently stood.
Progress stopped, new buildings down… future plans violently unfurled
For today, September 20, I saw God wash the world.
