Carnie Dog

When I traveled with the carnival, I had a furry friend
Who I picked up in Rossville on the side of highway’s bend.
Free said that white cardboard sign before those Amish smiles
And I grabbed up the chubby one to make his life worthwhile

I gave them a few rabbits that my boss had turned free
Because they were so tame but they couldn’t live with me.
And onward I went with life down that road so gray
And that little puppy slept for that whole day.

Beside me on my bench seat, he took his perch on Earth
Mere six weeks after drawing breath after his birth.
The rides did not frighten him nor did the crowds
He’d just wag is inch long tail with his head held proud.

He loved the attention he’d get and oh, those human games
He’d jump straight up into the air at the mere mention of his name.
Someone dubbed him Gator, though to this day I don’t know why
But we’d him “Puthy Puppy” and he’d bark a battle cry.

I didn’t need a leash to walk him, he was inches from my feet
And when we walked into a town, he would never call retreat.
Fearless little puppy such a large belly he did receive
While traveling with that carnival, food always on the scene.

But when the season was over, to a factory, I had to go
And the little puppy was lonely because I was never home.
Poor little guy always wanted to be near me, to me, I was him Mom
But working third shift in a foundry, his happy home was gone.

It broke my heart when day did come I gave him away
And I’ve never seen him again and never will in any day.
The family is gone who took him, they’ve moved to some unknown.
A Rott-Shephard mix in this world, once loved, is now alone.
