That's right, Jon, we did beat the Beavers. How we got them to come to our crib, I have no idea. But the horrendous pre-season schedule absolutely killed us, leading to that awful 3-8 record. In addition to OSU, we had to play the other Oregon, Arizona, Fresno St. (pre-Tark), and Nebraska. And trying to come up with a QB to succeed Craig Whelihan (who played for the Chargers) didn't help matters any: we went through two fifth-year seniors and a redshirt freshman b-4 the season ended.

But something cool happened along the way: we ended up on ESPN. At San Jose St., we won on the last play of the game. Our redshirt freshman QB, Graham Leigh of New Mexico and XFL fame, hit our best receiver, Tyrone Watley, at the Spartan five with no time on the clock; when Ty turned around there was a guy in blue right there. All the SJSU guy had to do was complete a textbook tackle, and the game would have been over, UOP loses another one. But the idiot tried a chop block instead, which resulted in Ty Wat being catapulted into the endzone, putting UOP up by one. SJSU insists that the extra point be tried so that they could block it and return it for two so they could win. Meanwhile, the Tigers were being penalized 15 yards for unsportsman-like conduct for the endzone dogpile that ensued (which included the 6th string QB with glasses and no pads!). That was the only time I've ever seen the kneel-down play on an extra point; we weren't about to let that win get away!

But the worst part wasn't all the losses (though they did hurt a lot). It was a week b-4 Christmas. We were just starting the post-season workouts and the coaches were out recruiting for the '96 season. I was watching the evening news when the unmentionable was announced: all 106 or so of us were being fired. I still haven't really recovered from that. But, I'll tell you what: when the program is reinstated, my name will be first on the list for that head coaching job! GO TIGERS!!!
